The squirrels have nibbled so many of the fallen conkers that the children haven't taken for their conker championships (if H&S permits them in their schools!)
Apparantly the first recorded game of Conkers was on the Isle of Wight in 1848, (but facts from Wikki cannot be relied upon!)
interesting subjects attractively photoed ---and what is a gam of conkers? These look pretty sticky--are they small as a cocklebur or as large as an osage orange?
@cutekitty ooh, they're poisonous to peeps kitty!!! @lanikyea horse chestnuts. Threaded on string and swung to hit and smash an opponent's conker. Very old game and world championships on soon!!! @quietpurplehaze thank you, took ages to get right too @jacqbb thank you so much @365anne the leaves are so pretty at the moment @carole_sandford thank you
I love conkers, they are so shiny and smooth. We used call them cheggies at school, but I think it's just a regional thing. I can't believe they have banned playing conkers in primary schools because the children might get a bit in their eye when they smash off the string. How ridiculous! I am looking forward to taking some conker shots myself.
Love it. As I said to Carole in response to her conker photo, the world has gone mad. How did I ever survive the 'olden days' We are raising a generation of wimps these days. No germs because we disinfect everywhere, no injuries because we wrap them in cotton wool. no exercise because we drive them everywhere. I could go on and on and on …...
Wow - I also had to look this up - the idea of kids playing it makes it sound so innocuous - but boy - after reading all the rules and using a bit of imagination I can see that this can be a serious contest!! With no mercy given!! "Round the World", "Stamps" "Conkers completely destroyed","Victorious conker assuming the score of all his victim's precedent foes" - must be awesome fun!! :)
