As often with me the idea didn't quite pan out but I persisted and then experimented with GIMP and editing the colour channels. No idea what I was doing but I do like that the lustre of the red petals has been preserved.
Any advice on how to sharpen the shadow and maintain the white ???

Swapped my finish time today, so I can hoop tomorrow.
On GIMP, if you play with the curves - when you get the graph up, pull down at the line at the bottom and up at the top so you make an S shape, that sometimes pull out the shadows. Also on Brightness and Contrast, if you up both the brightness and contrast by 10 to 25 you may get better contrasts for shadows.
@shannejw thank you, I did experiment using the curves and I did do stuff to contrast . I think I didn't start with a good shot, I should have concentrated on getting contrasts better in the camera. Technology cannot be expected to resçue a pigs ear!!! @jacqbb thank you
The sheen on the back of the petals is lovely. Perhaps another way to view this would be to crop out the shadow and most or all of the other flower. The subject would then truly be those beautifully shaped petals and the shine on them.

@grammyn could have been better but I'm learning. Thank you
