The clock tower is a free-standing clock tower in the centre of Brighton and is acknowledged as one of the town's main landmarks.
Queen Victoria celebrated her Golden Jubilee in 1887 and many towns built Jubilee clock towers to commemorate the occasion. Brighton Clock Tower was built in 1888.
A time ball was designed for the clock tower soon after it opened. The hydraulically operated copper sphere at the top of the tower moved up and down a 16-foot metal mast every hour, based on electrical signals transmitted from the Royal Observatory in Greenwich. The feature was disabled after a few years because of complaints about the noise it caused.
It has been described as "a giant salt-cellar" and "charmingly ugly".
Well, it was built in 1888 and next to that very modern glass building, it may look outdated. But, then again, historical can look better than modern! :)
I try to find something different each day, if I can
A phrase I used myself only last week!
