This may be the father fox. I thought it was the mother when I took it, but this fox has darker 'tips' than the one I always see feeding the babies. Yesterday we had 2 adult foxes watching the babies and hunting all over the yard, and I'd read that the father helps provide food for the babies and also for the mother who stays with the kits to keep them safe. Please Fox Family, help yourself to all the mice and moles you can eat! Last night I'd wondered if all the vigorous hunting was because they knew this bad weather was coming,
Sorry that this is from yesterday, bit it is raining heavily here, so I probably won't be able to get a new photo of this fox.
He looks good magnified. SOOC with cropping.
your fox pictures are absolutely amazing. My mother and I were talking about them yesterday and we agreed this could never happen over here, not even in the countryside where my parents live.
@spthorne Thanks Simon! I'd wondered if my leafy yard was one of the factors that helped the fox family choose my yard...that and the shed for shelter, and the water supply, a small stream, that runs behind the shed.
@halkia Thank you so much Judith! We feel really lucky to have them here. And we are also pleased that no neighbors have complained about them though seriously I don't see how they could be moved anyway. :-)
God bless the foxes, the coyotes and the raccoons not to even mention the deer, the bears and the wolves, and Sasquatch. This is a hard life among human beings and to be killed for living is really a sad statement about our relationship with Mother Nature. I am so glad you got a picture of this fox. It looks healthy and that is rare these days.
@jenrobcarr Thanks! About moles, they are destructive to lawns, so they aren't very welcome. :-) plus that's one of our cats chosen prey to leave as gifts for me to find on my deck, so it helps me a lot if the foxes eat them for me. win/win.
Oh he is beautiful! I love the black feet! You're really lucky to have such great subjects, right outside your back door, to photograph. And those kits will be so much fun when they get a bit older and start exploring their outside world more. Just have to be a little cautious with your little one...
