On the 9th we toured both Auschwitz and Birkenau Camps ,
It was a beautiful day and quite hard to comprehend all that occurred in these places .
I had hoped to have gone to Germany too,to the staglag my Dad was in but time ran out .
In the Netherlands, we have a programme that sends young offenders of hate crimes to the former Concentration Camps in order to learn what the consequences can be ... one can only hope, it helps.
Just finished a book about Germany during WWII and have just begun another about the concentration camps. (Both Book Club books). I wonder how anyone could do these things to other people. Hope your dad survived his time in the camp. A friend of mine's father was in one, too.
I have been through several Holocaust museums (the one in Washington DC has its lobby set up to look like Auschwitz when you enter- very powerful!). It boggles my mind that anyone could deny this horror happened- but they do! I can't say this would be on my "bucket list" but I've always thought if I had the opportunity it would be a place I'd see although I know it would pierce my soul for what happened there.
@olivetreeann I have to agree it was extremely moving myself and a young lass didn’t go into the open gas chamber both in tears at the thought of horror that went on in these camps .
Certainly was
They have one gas chamber open but found impossible to enter as did a few of us
