Hearst Castle Collage by Swazzette

Hearst Castle Collage

I spent two days at this place, so how could I NOT include more photos from my visit? I was especially impressed by the second swimming pool. They actually filmed a scene for the 1960 film "Spartacus" around the pool (the only film that has ever been allowed to film on the grounds) because many of the surrounding architectural pieces were actually from ancient Rome. I cannot emphasize enough how fantastic this place is or how many wonderful artifacts are on view when touring through the four buildings, gardens and grounds. If you want to check it out for your self, go to: http://www.hearstcastle.org/

I should note that this place has a very strong Hollywood connection, as Hearst's mistress/companion for over 30 years, Marion Davies, was a famous actress. Clark Gable, Charlie Chaplin, Gloria Swanson, Gary Cooper, you name it...they all spent time here. I also want to point out that this place was designed by a woman architect, Julia Morgan (born in 1872), who spent 28 years of her life working on the building and amending of this property.

BTW - Hearst never referred to it as a castle. He preferred to call it "the ranch". Ye Doggies!
I so want that swimming pool.

wow - just checked out the website and I'm amazed by the number of different tours they offer!!

Yes. It's an amazing place. The castle sits on top of a mountain overlooking the ocean, and the Visitors Center, where you begin your tour, is at the foot of the mountain, five miles away from the castle. At one time, Hearst owned the nearly 400 square miles around it.

We took the "Experience Tour" the first day, which is nice overview, but we really enjoyed the more in-depth Tours 2 and 3 the next day. Wish we would have had time for Tour 4. Next time.

I'd love to visit there. I love castles (or ranches) and other old and luxury buildings. Good idea that you made a collage.

nice collection of pics of "the ranch"

Fantastic. I see so many influences; the ceiling looks like a European castle, the window balcony like Lima, and the pools like a modern Rome.

Every one of those photos is beautiful! Let's hear it for that new camera and the photographer behind it! This is one of my favorite places to visit in California, so I'm delighted to see your pictures, and you didn't miss a lick in your perfect description! Thanks so much for pulling the group together for a visit this evening... You *know* we had a wonderful time!
