The last two nights out of three, we've had lobsters for dinner...not one, but two per night! Seems that this year the fisherman can hardly give them away, and even the locals say they've never seen it so inexpensive. Suits me! It's above all else, my favorite meal!
Billy, David and Dill came over at 5:00 and we enjoyed cocktails, music and good conversation before setting to the terrible task of boiling the lobsters. Billy grew up in his parent's Baltimore Seafood Restaurant, so he's adept in the kitchen (as is David, who owned an inn in the Poconos in years past.) Billy had made a coleslaw and salad to go with dinner, but we all filled up on the main course. I'm pleased to say I made a fantastic "Apple Dapple" cake for dessert (and didn't forget the baking soda) and it was picture perfect...I'll leave it for public viewing on my blog sometime tomorrow http://365daysintheyear.shutterfly.com/ The guys all had dessert after we retired to the living room, but I'll save a piece to have in the morning.
Initially I thought I'd use a picture from our morning walk as we're all going to do that again each day. I have the feeling if I ran a marathon tomorrow it wouldn't burn off the calories I've been enjoying these last few days!
As the gathering didn't break up until shortly before midnight, I didn't have time today to see all the pictures of those who left comments for me; I like to return the favour. I really appreciate all you've shared with me and hope to have a bit more time here this week!
You know, I have never actually had lobster before. It is usually far to expensive but it might be worth a try for our anniversary dinner for $5/lb! I do love seafood and forget it when it comes to crab. Yum!
I can't believe I'm the first to comment--must be a slow night!! LOL This is a great picture but honestly...I dont know how you can eat lobster!! Looks like a bug to me!! :) I'm glad you are having so much fun....
You've had to eat lobster for two nights out of three! That must qualify as some type of torture....LOL That looks delicious......and for 5 a pound, who can argue!
Ooh, I'm so jealous! I LOVE lobster! There's a great place back home right on the fish pier called Nickerson's, and they make the best lobster rolls ever. Maybe I'll have to get one later this summer and make it my photo of the day!
BTW, I was cracking up at your "he beats me all the time" comment! Stratego is a pretty neat game... at the most basic, the goal is to capture your opponent's flag. But it's not nearly as easy as it sounds!
hahaha...No! I wasn't serious about torture comment! Just being a bit comedic! I do LOVE lobster! In fact, I was at the market today eyeing up the lobster tank, but I held off until vacation time for the lobsters.
It was fun doing that with Nathaniel today. I did keep the outing short since it was raining pretty good. I know what you mean about falling short. It is so hard to strike a balance when you are having fun. Just take it all in as best you can and pace yourself. The fun will be waiting for you in the morning! Sweet dreams! *hugs*
This holiday is getting better and better! We don't get lobster in our oceans - we have another animal called a crayfish and you'll pay 4x what you are paying for for lobster.
Your observation about my husband is quite correct - he's 6ft 10". That door-way in the picture is a normal sized door, so he has to stoop to get through any standard door-way. His whole family are tall - both sisters over 6ft. I'm hoping that our sons are not that tall because it's inconvenient. There are so many places he just does not fit. It's the key reason that we don't travel as much as we'd like to.
When I vacationed to Maine I had lobster every night I was there. Don't think I could get myself to cook them myself unless it was a survival situation considering I didn't even like it when the restaurants would leave the head for display purposes :). I felt bad at the time for eating so many, but I haven't had lobster since and that was over 10 years ago. Enjoy one for me Louise!
Just thought you should know that this photo was suggested to me on the new suggestion page!! Isn't that Ross clever. I love lobster and am lucky enough to live in NE but those prices haven't arrived here......yet
What a perfect shot!! I love seafood!!! It's wonderful that you can get it so fresh and cheap!! ;-)) Your photo makes me hungry, Louise! ;-)) I have never cooked lobster before, and i don't know if I'll manage to bring myself to doing it one day. Do they really make a screeching sound? This reminds me of a scene from "Julie and Julia" that I simply have to share with you:
hahaha, it's great to know you have *finally* unpacked, it would have been the same with me. as I got older i have adopted a more laid back style and enjoy life more!
Oh my favorite! Bad thing is I'm allergic to it, every time I eat lobster, crab, or squid my skin get's so red and itchy. BUT I super Love your photo! perfect shot.
Louise---I have tasted lobster before and I will admit it tasted good but there's now way I could get the meat out myself!! :) The girls in my picture are not students---Addie on the left is my middle daughter and the other girl is her best friend :)
Louise, I am so glad you enjoyed the little clip from "Julie and Julia"! Meryl Streep does a great job impersonating Julia Child, and I am sure you are going to love the movie! :-) It's funny you had a simlar episode in your kitchen... ;-))
And about the walks - yes, I am guilty of the same thing: bringing the camera along!I didn't use to, but sometimes there are such great finds which simply need to be photographed! Which reminds me of another movie, "500 days of Summer", where there was a group of people meeting to do "jogging photography" - taking pictures while running in the park! Needless to say they were producing some pretty smeared images... Maybe we can form 'Snap as you Walk" group, or something :-)
P.S. Can you tell that before 365, I was a devoted movie fan?? ;-)
Life is tough up in NS isn't it? Good friends, good conversation and wow, a great dinner. I love your choice of a picture! You will be walking the back bay each day but (odds are) you won't have lobster EVERY day - just often! I am enjoying with you!
I've had lobster once and enjoyed messing about with the strange hammer thing you get. Re the door - I take the same walk every day at lunchtime and must have photographed some objects on the street at least ten times now. Always something different to see. 365 has woken my eyes up a bit!
What a great photo...the color and the way you cropped or framed it. I love lobster but I have to order a lobster tail...if that guy is looking right at me I just can't dig into him! lol
Louise : Regarding Mangosteen, it tastes really good and this fruit is used to combat cancer cells. If ever you'd get the chance to travel and have a taste of Asia, in Thailand, Malaysia, or here in the Philippines you can find this fruit sold anywhere.
Louise, I bet Ken no longer feels guilty leaving yo behind when he golfs now! Win-win situation :-) And you are right..don;t know many who would have a wall that giant mosaic would look good on!
I love that you counted Dill amongst the dinner guests! Great shot... hope it wasn't a relative of my buddy at the Shedd Aquarium: http://365project.org/kerri26/365/2010-05-11 LOL!
I told Catherine that you said 'hi' ... we have both been working some crazy hours lately so neither one of us has been on 365 as much as we'd like. Hopefully next week will be better....
Looks yummy. Reminds me of when I lived on Cape Cod for 3 years and had way too much free lobster. I commuted to school in Boston 4 nights a week and got really tired of eating lobster for dinner (sometimes lunch and even breakfast). Somewhere I have a photo of my cat (at the time) sitting in a chair at the dinner table eating lobster off of a plate.
Yummmmy, I love lobster and seafood generally - here in the UK lobster's an absolute luxury food though. So looks like a trip to Canada might pay for itself, if you have appetites like ours!
Oh, this looks gorgeous! (My English friends refer to everything as "gorgeous"...particularly a good wine or yummy bite of food!). Boy, it has been a very long time since consuming one of these babies, but I remember how scrumpti-licious it was. Mmmmmmmm.
Heading out to check out another rental place tonight. Coming up on 3 weeks left before we have to move, and still no idea where we're going. Not in panic mode yet, but 'tis getting just a wee bit scary.
Wow. I haven't had a whole lobster in years. Sure the occasional lobster tail with a seafood combination, but not a whole lobster. I think the last time was about six or seven years ago when we stayed at a B&B in Kennebunkport, Maine. I can still taste it. It was the best I ever had. A close second is blue claw crabs especially in the Chesapeake Bay area. A table full of them, some good draft beer and friends. Life doesn't get much better. keep the pics and journal entries coming.
Unbelievable how cheap lobster is there. I love seafood and would eat it every single day if I could. Unfortunately living in the Midwest it isn't so cheap here. So only on special occasions do I get the chance to indulge in my favorite food. But I say if its possible to eat it and not have to worry about the price then go for it. Eat one for me while you're at it :)
@pamknowler This goes way WAY back! 68 comments and only one fave...people were very frugal with them then! Also, this was only the second photo posted with the tag "lobster"! All the info about buying lobsters here is on this one...and how we ate lobster often!
@Weezilou how things have changed on 365! 68 comments and 1 Fav! Amazing! Thanks for all the lobster info and for sharing all your lobster pics. I feel hungry now - time for breakfast! Lol!

I love the colors and composition of the photo. Seems to be just a tad bit blurry, though. The green bowl in the background adds a nice contrast.

It's one of my favorite movies, watch it if you haven't seen it! :-) Good you had Billy and David to assist you with the lobster preparation!
P.S. I just came back from my moring walk! Feeling so refreshed and alive! :-)
