Lunenburg's Folk Harbour Festival. This annual event is one of my favorite summer weekends here, and I couldn't wait for the music to begin.
But before that, and before dawn, Ken left with Mitch & Will to go white-water rafting on "the tidal bore" "somewhere up north of here". I don't like rising early, I don't like cold water, I don't like that sort of activity (which was also going to be muddy), so Dill & I held down the fort until they returned in time for an afternoon of music in the park.
What a reward! Eight people or groups performed half-hour sets and I really enjoyed most of the music. Tom Chapin http://www.tomchapin.com/ (brother of Harry) did a wonderful show, andanother favorite was Shane Phillip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8iOFj6BTVpI&feature=related. The final group was from Newfoundland, playing four instruments I'm not familiar with (except the boran drum) and they had a fabulous sound, playing jigs & hornpipes (pretty local stuff!)
Though the park was full, it was so informal I felt comfortable walking up to the bandstand to get my close-up photos. 365 has really given me much more confidence as a photographer...I feel as though I look like I know what I'm doing!
This evening we all went to dinner at one of my favorite restaurants in this region, the Seaside Shanty in Chester Basin. We watched the sky turn pink as the sun set and we ate out on the back deck by the water.
Did I say this is one of my favorite summer weekends?
Sounds like it was perfect in every way. I remember Tom Chapin when he had a great weekly music show on PBS for kids. I think he had a mustache at the time! He had a great warm voice and his heart was in the right place. I hope he still sounds as good.
Yes, I know him!!! I love his song..."Not on the Test" or something like that about standardized testing! I played it for background music for my powerpoint for a class assignment! Thanks for sharing this...and now I'll go to your link!
Oh, that sounds so awesome! I love the confidence thing. As for me, I just got too old to care. In some ways, the more ridiculous I look, the more people seem to think, "Oh, he's just a photographer." I think that's not a bad thing.
@Tanya...in my copy of the picture, you could make out the crowd on the hillside perfectly. Glad you could see that!
@ Richard...Tom's 3 daughters were on stage singing with him, too. There was also a group of children who sounded fabulous in a round he sang with them!
Sounds like a wonderful way to spend the day!!
I´m sure Dill feels the same way you do about rafting, I think he appreciated you staying home with him!
It sounds like that festival is a lot of fun! Great shot, and I'm glad you're getting more comfortable with just going in for the shot. This project really is great for that!
What a great portrait! I love it when you see a live musical performance and you can tell that the musician is clearly having a great time and is doing what he or she loves. Those are the performances that I enjoy the most. This musician looks like he just lives for this so it must have been a delight to see him in person and share his passion.
I'm only just getting around to responding to comments from my project's final photo. Still taking photos of course, but not necessarily every day. Some money-making possibilities are on the horizon w/ my equine photography which is exciting :)
I feel like many of the folks on here, including you, have become like family & so I wanted to say that if you have facebook, I would love for you to add me: http://www.facebook.com/wheeler.laura
like that I can feel like I still have some of this 365 family close by.
Best of luck as you finish the project ... I promise to come back & comment from time to time :)
Sounds like so much fun! You've had quite the summer and it's not over yet :) I'm still not quite as confident in some shooting situations as you. Wonder if I'll ever be?
Anyone can find one with a tag and send the information to Monarch Watch. I haven't ever found one but I am going to tag them for sure next year. You only tag the ones that go to Mexico, which would be the next batch that will come from the eggs I've just gathered.
I'm going to read about the tagging process in a moment, but (call me crazy...) how do you know they're headed to Mexico and the earlier ones won't? (also, I'm trying to envision you in a tent with WiFi :-)
I do remember Harry but I wasn't familar with Tom. Sounds like a good time Louise. Great shot of Mr. Chapin! Oh and thanks for the link to the restaurant. It looks like a great place to eat!
You did a great job capturing the true joy Tom has entertaining. I'm getting old because it's always refreshing to see a musician just being a musician - no crazy makeup or outfit, no stage pyrotechnics or ensemble of synchronized dancers, etc. :) Sounds like you had a blast.
My son, nephew and nieces saw Tom Chapin in concert a few years ago and still sing his songs. They sang "This Pretty Planet" for my in-laws for their 50th.
No wonder you look and feel like you know what you're doing...you know what you're dong! This photo looks terrific. I've been aware of Tom Chapin for many years, but today was the first time I'd sat down and listened to him, and he's delightful. Thanks for sharing. :)
@katswhiskers I love live music and theater. I feel as though the best shows have good interaction between the musician/actor and audience when the appreciation is flowing in both directions!

We went out to eat the other night and there was a guitar player there entertaining. I loved it!
My son Jordan and I will be touring a few lighthouses, hopefully. My hubby usually likes to stay back at camp and fish on his boat. I can't wait!
Have a great week, Louise!
