In Lunenburg, if you weren't born here, you're referred to as a "Come From Away"...and so we all are!
Sunday morning, as always, a group of us met for breakfast, and afterward, gathered more friends to attend The Mi'kmaq/Acadian Festival down the coast at Fort Point on the LaHave River. Beautiful day... Nice drive... Marvelous museum and Fort worth visiting... But we found we'd missed the festival by a day! Not wanting to waste a minute lamenting our loss, we drove to Green Bay, a little seaside community of summer cottages, and stopped at the canteen at the end of the road where we enjoyed fish & chips, topped off by huge ice cream cones! As we finished, a sweet-faced lady came over to our table and asked if we'd enjoyed the festival "yesterday". It turned out she was a friend of Gill's, and, herself, a Mi'kmaw Elder and chairperson of the festival. As we were introduced and visited, it struck me what a diverse circle of friends we are...a microcosm of our 365 community. You might enjoy meeting my friends, Gill, and her husband, John (back/hat) who came here originally from South Africa. In the center, visiting Gill from Halifax, is her friend, Sujarta, originally from India. On the right is Enid and her husband, Gordon (left), annual summer visitors from Australia. In pink is Ellen, a Mi'kmac Elder originally from Newfoundland. And Ken and I are here from California, USA. The pamphlets are programs from the festival we missed, but then again, given the fun we had together over the course of the afternoon, maybe we really hadn't missed anything!
Thank you again for your always-enjoyable comments and letting me share my summer with you. I certainly haven't had time to be bored...I just sometimes run short of time...
That is awesome. Reminds me of the story Tony Campolo once told me: was in a small northeastern town and saw an obituary that read. "Joe lived in _______ for the past 67 years, and it was as though he was one of us." But I think wherever you have good friends, you are home.
another great day!! (i'm especially partial to the 'fish & chips' part...) (:
love this look at your sweet friends. isn't it amazing though how friends can also be people you've never even met?! i very much feel that way here on 365, and you, my friend, are a huge part of why!!
What a serendipitous meeting! Sounds like you all had a great time. I too covet the fish and chips! What an awesome memory album you are creating this summer!
Louise, you guys have an amazing life together! I love looking at your pictures, as you are always surrounded by friends and so much love! Also, I don't know how you seem to fit all of your fun activities in when you seem to find the time to take great shots and comment on everyone's pictures as well - it's just incredible to me.
Thanks for the applause on my "numbers" shot from yesterday : ) And I absolutely wear my heart on my sleeve, always have...it seems like we may have that in common : )
What a nice melting pot too. I've always been a "Come from Away" so I can relate to that (moved yearly as a kid). Sometimes the phrase used isn't so kind, so it was nice to read that's the one they use there (:
How wonderful to have formed such great friendships from near and far. These are definitely your "gsite'taqang". (ummm...I hope I got that right...I think that is Mi'kmac for "precious ones". Isn't the internet wonderful?)
Louise - Just have to pass along the news that Richard and I convinced another member of our grade school class to join us up here on 365. Bwahahahahaha! *sinister laugh*
Louise, I am not at all surprised you and your group found a way to make the best of the day. I visited Nova Scotia s a child but after seeing all your wonderful water scenes, I want to return as an adult and take in the beauty and the culture! And just in case I don't get to do that you can be proud of all you shared with me (us) this summer! In fact, I would not be surprised if Lunenberg sees its biggest tour year ever next summer ;-)
What a great mix of people from everywhere! Sounds like yet another great summerday! I started working again today,it´s back to school overhere. But I still get to enjoy a bit of vacation through your wonderful stories. thank you for sharing!!And thank you for your kind words always. It seems Pip is doing a little better today, hopefully she´ll recover soon.
Wonderful! I found a poem that suggests that even though we are miles apart and from different cultures...we are still connected. It made me think of 365. I learn so much from other people's pictures, which is a benefit that I never thought about. Thanks for sharing this!
hi Louise, i saw the pantsy sarong in your other picture and that's really gorgeous, i hope i can find one like that in Malaysia, I am asking my friends who are coming to visit in October to get me one. thanks a lot for your lovely comments....it's good that you have all these wonderful experiences recorded here like a photo-journal. I found out that this is indeed a very useful tool especially when we want to recall a certain day. I am going for a minor procedure this morning and praying all goes well.
wow sounds like you had a great time! Its good to know i'm not the only one that talks about food. phew :)
aawww thanks for thinking of me as one of your favourite photographers, i'm very flattered
sounds like a really great diverse group of friends! Thanks for giving us an update on your very fun sounding community, as well as being such a great member of this one!

Sorry you missed the festival, but in pure "Louise-fashion" you managed to make the most (and best) of the situation!
Be sure and check her (Angela) out sometime and give her a big ol' howdy do! http://365project.org/tangie/365/2010-08-17
Thank you for your kind comments, and, no, my husband definately would NOT be joining us here. He is just fine with "watching" and carrying my tripod.

Back where I'm from, if you're not local, you're known as a "wash ashore." But I love the term "come from away". Much more polite!
