With every day that passes, I dread watching the time sliding by to the day we have to leave our Nova Scotia home. On another gorgeous day, we spent the morning with our friends here in Lunenburg before heading out for a drive to visit neighbouring towns to the north. Today's destination was the peaceful, upscale community of Chester, with it's vintage whitewashed homes, many with gorgeous windows and large glass-enclosed sun porches. It, too, sits along a bay, every home seemingly having a beautiful view to the water. We walked the quiet streets past lovely old churches and graveyards before spending a little time in the small shopping area that seems to predominately sell beautiful glass and pottery items. A favourite shop of mine sells fused-glass art pieces, and I fell in love with their collection of cats. Just as well my wallet was empty as I couldn't have made a choice as to which I'd have loved to have had! Their web site doesn't show any of their cats, but if you want to see the sort of work they carry, it's here http://www.kilnart.ca/ At sunset we headed home along the coast, arriving in Lunenburg for dinner http://www.trattoriadellanonna.ca/ to celebrate John & Mary's 42nd anniversary. Over dinner they couldn't say enough nice things about this area and want to return. I understand how they're feeling!
Perhaps it was because of the slightly overcast skies and the beautiful scenery today, but I was delighted with nearly every picture I took. I can't explain how it breaks my heart to have to leave the photographic choices I've had this summer. Southern California may be a vacation destination, but, personally, for me, it lacks the vintage charm I'm drawn to here. Tonight I'm feeling sad about having to say goodbye to our company tomorrow afternoon and winding down in the coming days...
I can see why you fell in love with so many of those pieces! That shop has some beautiful things! It must be so bittersweet for you to know the season is winding down. I've loved seeing all of your Lunenberg photos and following in your adventures so far, and I'll be sad to see your time in Nova Scotia come to an end for the year.
will have to check out their site! will be sad as well when we don't get the daily lunenborg shots! i adore our house, but always wish it had more charm instead of looking like every other one on the block... have jokingly wanted to paint the door fuschia!
Basically, attach one lens to your camera (I used my 75-300), then take another lens (I used my 50mm), turn it around so that the front of that lens faces the front of the lens on your camera and tape them together with electrical tape. Prop the reversed lens's aperture control open (see his description), switch your attached lens to manual focus, and voila! Macro on the cheap. ;-)
The most beautiful part of your project, your summer Nova Scotia pictures, and the way you have spent your time there - you have absolutely lived it up! Just keep doing what you have done over this summer and keep that with you! While saying goodbye is sad, I'd hate to see you spending your final days feeling sad anticipating the end..when the end is not yet upon you.
Feeling your dread! I can't stand the lonely feeling that comes with saying goodbye to people and places. And, I feel the same way about Oakland. Never seems to be anything interesting to shoot and yet, I am fascinated by the photos people post of other places. Maybe it's the familiarity that makes us miss the beauty.
Love the cat but sending sympathy for your move! But, you'll be the same people with the same good eye for a picture and the same fun! Different location just adds variety!
It must be very hard to lave such a beautiful place with so many lovely people and great memories - I love how the cat's wistful expression captures that mood.
Your response didn't seem at all rude! I totally understand that you have limited time to comment while you have company in town. :-) BTW, from what I gather, you can use any lens as your reversed lens...I went with my 50mm because it has the larges aperture of all my lenses.
I can honestly see why it would be difficult to leave that area. You have shared some wonderful photos. I may have missed it, but when do you typically return.
Oh, Louise, I hear the sadness in your voice and wonder, what draws you back to California? (I'm imagining that it must be the weather, as I'll bet Nova Scotia winters are brutal ...)
I can't imagine having to make a choice between my two homes because I love them both so much ... the transitions are just a part of my life. I think I appreciate each more because of the other.
I too can feel your sadness as the days get closer to your leaving Nova Scotia. I feel like we've been there with you and I will miss the scenery and Dill too. Thanks by the way for visiting my Varmint picture - twice - you're too funny!
Leaving a place you love so much and where you have such dear friends is not easy. And we’ll miss the stories and the faces we’ve come to recognize. But since you’re the kind of person who makes life happen, I know we’ll read more wonderful stories and meet more of your friends on your return to California. Love the wistful kitty – the non-allergenic kind!
the lovely kitty in your shot even looks a little melancholy, like you're feeling about the impending departures. from your photos it is a place i've put on my 'want to visit' list. but don't forget all of the wonderful upcoming delights you've got in store--europe and a grandbaby to name a couple! (:
Talk about a "cool cat". This one certainly is! I love it and will check out the site. The wonderful thing is that you will have all of your photographs to look at throughout the year. And you will return to NS.
What a wonderful cat! I love the colour! Great shot!
I enjoyed you diary of your day the sites to view.
The map of Lunenburg was evry interesting - lots of churches.
It must have been hard to resist this art! I went to the site and it is so beautiful and whimsical! The plates and platters are gorgeous! I wish you a safe return to SD :o)
Love this "Cheshire looking cat! Maybe in California you'll have some time to play around with some editing techniques...I for one can't wait to see what you decide to post when you get home!
I'll miss living vicariously through your photos here! Novia Scotia looks like such a beautiful place - I'd love to visit it in person someday. I was actually born in Southern California but don't really remember anything about it.
It has been a magical several months for you, hasn't it? I bet you have even given some thought to moving to Nova Scotia except those darn winters might be a tad colder than you are used to! I love this cat photo!
What a cute little kitty! I can imagine how disheartening it is for you to think about leaving your summer home. It doesn't take long to be accustomed to a place and feel like you want to stay forever. I have been on vacation this week here in California and after a few days with friends north of San Francisco, I am no sitting in Carmel by the Sea and have fallen in love with it! I haven't posted photos beyond our arrival in San Fran and the two days with friends, but hope to get more up when I get a chance. Today we head for San Simeon and Hearst Castle. I can't wait!
VERY cute piece of art! Definitely not Dill though LOL! I know that's got to be a sad thing to leave such a marvelous place. I certainly will miss you sharing pictures! I will like to see photos of your other home too though!
How much longer do you have there?
Beautiful photo you shared with us today. I'll have to look at the Web site later when I get home from work.
Thanks for the journey today. Loved the cat and good thing you didn't get one, I think Dill would have been jealous. Enjoy your last week and I know you will have new visions to show us on the West Coast.
Just read your comments-am sure she is in such good hands! It's a funny thing, my mom who is such an amazing support and forever singing my praises on the work front was beside herself with worry when I chose to have a homebirth with Jack.Luckily Jack was born without complication and is the light of our lives. Your daughter's midwife will know when to access intervention. My thoughts and prayers are with the expectant mom and I cant wait to hear news of the treasured grandchild x
Always a shame having to leave somewhere after having such a wonderful time... no chance you could move their permanantly? Or maybe would that spoil the 'specialness' of the place?
Aw, I'm so sorry you have to leave--it sounds like maybe you need to move there (?) This looks like a very happy fat kitty to go with my happy fat mousie (:
I have family in S. California, and I have to admit--I would pick Nova Scotia over it any day of the week. Your photos of it have really been a joy.
i have been reading each and every story you've written in your calendar and i am only getting more and more interested to follow through, you have such a wonderful life, dear Louise and you inspire me in many ways!
How much we have all enjoyed your stay in N.S. I have the feeling you would appreciate anywhere you land and your enthusiasm would rub off on all your friends. 100 years ago a hymn was written that perfectly expresses your wonderful nature, "Brighten the Corner where You Are."
thank you for sharing all the wonderful places Nova Scotia has to offer Louise. I have learned a lot and have some South Shore exploring to do now... thanks!
I love this cat! You should have taken it home with you. I'm sorry you're sad about leaving Lunenburg. I can understand why after seeing all the wonderful photos of this beautiful place. Now go back and get that cat before you leave...lol.
What a nice picture! I really like the colors! Tijgertje-like shades!
I can imagine you're having a hard time preparing for your goodbyes, you've had such a great time ! I am looking forward to your California pictures, though, it's as if I'm going to travel to another part of the world with you, through your pictures!
I LOVE that adorable kitty!! I have a thing for cats myself, and i got two wonderful kitty cat cups for the new house - one from my mother-in-law and one from my sister-in-law. They know me well ;-) I also have kittycat coasters, kitty slippers and socks and, of course, kittycat books ;-) It's not an obcession, it's a passion ;-)
now this is the kind of cat i like! (cat just woke me up at 3am and i couldn't get back to sleep until 530am :( )
that place has some nice pieces and i checked out the restaurant menu - yummy! i can see how you can fall in love with that place :)

Sad to hear Lunenburg has to give you up, but Orange County will be that much richer. :)
I can't imagine having to make a choice between my two homes because I love them both so much ... the transitions are just a part of my life. I think I appreciate each more because of the other.
Be at peace as your time "winds down, my friend!
