Peggy's Cove Nova Scotia ...a place like no other

Our long-time friends from California, Marilyn & Brian, arrived at noon and we took the coastal route to Lunenburg, stopping at the tiny fishing village of Peggy's Cove. The homes there are built upon massive boulders that exist in that spot, but nowhere else on the coast, having been deposited there by receding glaciers long ago. The gentleman in the photo, Roger Crooks, is 100% genuine. I asked to take his picture and we chatted...he's a retired fisherman and owns a little shack where he sells his hand-made wares and displays local artifacts, museum-style. I asked for his email address to send him pictures, but he doesn't own a computer. ...he'll be receiving something from me by mail...

Typically the lighthouse (which is also a post office) is photographed with friends standing in front of it, so I looked for a different angle... A woman passing by asked to see what I'd taken, as I was squatted close to the ground. When she saw the image, she said, "Can you do that?" (meaning,I guess, can you get both the flowers and lighthouse in the picture? ...) She seemed quite fascinated with the notion! Turned out she was visiting from California, too...

And then we stopped down the road at the site of the Swiss Air Memorial, marking the off-coast site of the plane crash that happened September 2, 1998. It was before I knew anything about Nova Scotia, but I vividly remember hearing the news and praying the plane would make it to a safe landing in Halifax. It didn't. The tragedy is now forever interwoven into the fabric of this little fishing community.

Such a small spot on the map. So much quiet beauty. So much history and amazing geography. Don't miss it when you have the chance to come here.

** "Local" to me is as small a space as the "Town of Lunenburg" or "The South Shore" of Nova Scotia. I posted this before thinking of the challenge, but these pictures illustrate #14...Local Industry which would be fishing and Tourism.

Very nicely done Louise, and I do like your angle on the lighthouse. I always find it to be a challenge to get a real good, appealing shot of them because there are always people around.
