No need to leave comments on this pairing...it was something I've been meaning to do for several years! I bought the old photo (print) when we first moved here as it's just a few houses down the street from us. I always assumed the house on the corner is the one that friends live in, but when I went to take the picture from the same vantage point, I realized the house in the picture is no longer there! There's a hedge there now, and the property behind it is part of another friend's yard (around the corner), I stepped back to include the house I thought belonged there and it didn't work...an interesting find!
It's not clearly visible, but I circled (center left) the edge of the trim on the court house that's a match...and the church has had some additions, but it's a match, too. Another interesting find is to see the street must have had some grading. The present photo isn't of great interest as a picture, now that it's filled in with trees, but as a local, I'm glad I finally did my homework!
I love that the church hasn't changed at all. A friend and I toured most of the churches one day and learned so much. People were there and gave us such interesting information.
I have a coffee table book of photographs of Williamsburg, VA before John D. rockerfeller's historic restoration and now. I find it fascinating. Maybe you could do the same in your locale.
