Ducking in Under the Wire by Weezilou

Ducking in Under the Wire

I have so much to learn about using the Shutter Speed, I made two attempts today and was fascinated to find I had different results in two different settings. I think I am correct that, being at some distance from the duck, the fastest speed was the clearest though the ISO was high.

Should I attempt to be the same distance from any subject for this challenge? I'm posting both test runs. The other: http://365project.org/Weezilou/album-excess/2015-01-23

BTW, that duck provided little movement to test...he stood there for 20 minutes, and between two shots at 1/250, I selected the one where he looked at me...just for some variety!
I would recommend the fastest shutter speed possible with enough aperture to get the desired DOF and the lowest ISO you can get away with. I would also keep the shutter speed faster than the focal length of your lens, especially if you are hand-holding as it helps prevent camera shake (i.e. 400mm lens, shoot at least 1/400th of a sec). I shot a seagull in flight today with a 200mm and the shutter speed was 1/2000th of a sec at f/9 and ISO 400 (bright sunny day). Hope that is of help. Good luck with your test runs. :)

@anne15 Thanks so much Anne! In reading and preparing for this, there was a lot of information given. There was mention of speed and lens distance, but it's so much to think about in the moment! I'm off to look at your seagull... it will come together eventually, I certainly hope! Thanks again for the suggestions!

Although I've only posted one set of photos that went along with this challenge, I've been shooting a few sets every day. I did go back and re-read the information after the first couple days of shooting, and found that to be very helpful.

I love that duck!

@jewelofdenial LOL! We call him "The Bachelor". We have a pair that have been "dropping in" for several years now (daily), and they don't think much of this loaner... He's speckled on his sides, so we can tell who's who! They make terrific subject matter when I'm in need! Thanks, Julie!

It has been really interesting seeing all the different experiments that people are trying out for the new camera settings challenge. Makes one really think about what setting you are using.

@salza I agree, Sally...For the first time I'm checking all three numbers before shooting (when not doing the class studies...)
