I'd be remiss if I didn't thank you all for the great reception you gave yesterday's pelican! It was such fun to stand so close to him, I'm delighted you enjoyed him as Ken and I did!
I'm an inconsistent photographer, and I didn't have any photo today that grabbed my attention. Here, yesterday, I tried to find that moment when the distant, snow-covered mountains were visible. At least in the large area where we live, there are few high points, and the most one can hope for is "a glimpse" of the majesty of these mountains "between two buildings", "between the trees", "looking past the service truck in front of you" or often, cloud covered! The series I got of how many ways the view could be obstructed became almost amusing.
So here, in this brief moment, four miles from home, is about the best view I was able to catch (from the car because this rise is covered with busy streets). A moment later we'd followed the cars to the right and down onto another freeway, the mountains disappearing from view once again.
FYI, if the traffic isn't bad, we can be to the ski slopes up there in two hours. No, I don't ski, but my family did, almost every winter weekend!
We've got it all out here! It's just very hard to get to...
What a fabulous distant view of the mountains! Wonderful to live so close - it must have been great for the skiers in your family! Is it the traffic which makes it very hard to get to? You definitely seem to have it all with both the sea and the mountains so close!
when i was a teenager in socal, we lived in the foothills...la crescenta.. and at certain times of the year from some places we could see the ocean. this reminded me of that in a reverse way!
@francoise Looking at this again this morning, it almost looks superimposed! It's a statement, I suppose, about what happens when everyone wants to have a piece of the location, and suddenly, what we came there for, can no longer be seen and enjoyed! Seems to apply to what you'd pointed out as well, Annie @annied . And given what Richard said, @chard , I know the area he's talking about, and there I could have photographed these mountains all day long...but I wouldn't have had the beach photos without driving the freeways (what a misnomer that word is! Certainly not "free-flowing"!). And Pam @pamknowler no question about it...it's always about the traffic out here! EVERYONE has to take it into consideration whether going to work (Ken used to leave at 5AM to beat the traffic to SD when he was working in the office down there...then plan how he'd get home with the least amount of traffic!) or to the beach to be there in time for the sunset! And an aside about the skiers... The office I'd gone to where I was holding the puppy...they're orthopedic surgeons...still seeing them about my fall. When taken to the room to see the dr, the man who does the x-rays stayed to chat with us. He said it had been crazy since the snow filled the mountains! He said you could count on that every season! Seems to me it was at least a more glamourous way to break a bone than my misstep last spring!
@digitalrn@joansmor Ahhh, a lovely view, though all to brief! Where you each live, you've got "vistas" that last longer than this one did! Thanks for stopping in with your thoughts and comments!
Sensational view of the mountains! I sometimes get a similar view driving toward the freeway entrance close to my house but since I'm in traffic, I can never get a shot.
I love this pov....it is wonderful to be able grab glimpses of those gorgeous mountains where ever you can find them. We feel that way about our beautiful Mt. Hood...so many venues to enjoy if. Love the urban mixed with the landscape. Great in b&w.
Love this in B/W and how lucky to see mountains!! The only thing I do miss from living in Alaska!! These are gorgeous and snow skiing is so much fun, another thing we don't get to do here! LOL The traffic, now that's another story, that we have and way too much of it! Beautiful scenery! FAV!
BW was such a great choice for this -- you've made it look surreal, with the tight focus on the mountain over the densely packed signs of civilization! Very clever shot.
On the tollway I see! Only a few days each year to catch such a sight, and you did it very nicely. Good job on explaining the fleeting chances to capture the image.
