Directly behind me where I photographed the flower yesterday, Mama Hummer is sitting on her nest in the avocado tree. She often buzzes around me, checking me out, so it should be no surprise to her that I like to look in on her now as well! When she was away, I used a mirror to see two teensy eggs in there...the typical number. Hummers seem to build on the lower branches, and when there's time to just sit in the yard and watch the activity of the birds and animals, soon the pattern of "gathering to make a nest" and then "coming and going" from the same spot will lead one to where they are!
I'll be watching to see what evolves and hope to return with some updates!
Oh my goodness what a privilege to be able to see the bird in the Nest! Such a beautiful sight! I look forward to seeing her babies! I see I need to visit OC to see hummingbirds for the first time! Lol! Fav for your lovely capture and presentation!
glad to know that you are on the mend. you scared the sh*t out of me with that "I'm going to live" bit on one of your pics. but I'm glad you are back to your normal self and able to interact with the critters once again. cheers!
This is very cool. This is the first year I’ve successfully had regular hummingbird visits to our yard. How great to be able to locate the nest and get such a nice shot!
@summerfield haha...I suppose I hadn't realized I never complained that I was getting sick, and then stopped posting! This one was pretty brutal, but I'm feeling stronger each day...still no voice to speak of Fri night...almost 2 weeks!
@amyk Don't you love watching them? I've seen the hummers have 3 sets of nestings, and May would be the last. Maybe they'll begin up there...sit patiently and just watch to see where they dart! Good luck!
@francoise Funny you should ask! I read they they're sound sleepers, but, their tiny feet, not being very strong, will wrap around a branch, and during deep sleep, they sometimes turn, head downward, but still hanging on! They're amazing little machines!
@louannwarren Make a circle with your index finger to your thumb...you're looking at a close approximation of the side! And each egg isn't as big as my little fingernail!
I've been wondering where you were too, wish I'd known you were poorly, could've sent emails to you with virtual hugs. I have no idea about hummers, I don't think we have them in Oz, if so, not in these parts.
@Weezilou What a lovely thought :) I love that verse - if God is looking out for even the teeny tiny baby sparrows and knows every feather on them, He definitely knows and cares about all the little details in my life too. I think He smiles very big smiles that you care for the "sparrows" you come across. A heart after His! :)
Howdy, Louise! This is such a special photo! Last year we spotted a hummer's nest and kept an eye on it but we haven't been as fortunate this year. I do have five hummingbird feeders with constant activity so fortunately I have ample opportunity for shots around the feeders. As a matter of fact, I think today I'm going to get some hummer shots for my 30 Days Wild, Day 2 project photo.
I've been thinking about you lately and wondering if you've already made your trip up north for the summer months? We're leaving on June 12th and as usual, these last two weeks here in Texas are busy as can be. I'm glad I started my "To Do Before We Leave" list several weeks ago so I'm staying relatively calm and grounded. :-)
@louannwarren @gardenfolk @ethelperry @golftragic @summerfield @pamknowler @allie912 @judithdeacon @bkbinthecity @craftymeg @filsie65 @sangwann @merrelyn @jamibann @francoise @radiogirl @maggiemae @amyk @joansmor Thank you ALL for the note and faves... Lovely to see my wee one on the PP : )
