One I'll Never Forget ...

Remembering my Dad and his military service today (though the war came to an end within days of my birth). The subject was never discussed, and like all men, I think many bore the burden alone. Dad died shortly before his 60th birthday, and only now and then have I looked at his old photos. Today seemed an appropriate time to bring out this marvelous childhood picture of him (on the rt) with his sisters and cousins and pair it with the man I remember from my childhood.

(The background pattern is a kaleidoscope image of the American flag.)
What a great collage. I love the way you have connected the background to the early photo with the American Flag and your Dad looks splendid in his uniform.

What a beautiful tribute to him. Wonderfully done!

Lovely photo. and sentiment. Thank you. You've given me the idea to post a photo of my dad today.

Thanks dear Louise for you visit and you so nice comments. My right shoulder, and arm, gives me still so many problems that I can`t do to much writings. I limmet myself to replay`s only and even that with several breacks between them.
A lovely tribute to you Dad, and as alway`s, I love you editing of pic.`s.

Great photo to have

Well done, Louise! A worthy tribute.

Wonderful tribute to your dad...great presentation

What a wonderful tribute to your dad! A very handsome man especially in his uniform! The old photo of him with his cousins is fabulous! Look at all their fantastic costumes. Do you know what occasion it was for them all to be dressed like this holding the flag? What lovely treasures you have found! Love your presentation too! Hope you are better and that your voice has returned.

What a wonderful tribute - thanks for sharing.

Love this one too, Louise. It is a wonderful and loving tribute with great vintage photos...the postcard queen! :)

Ahhh, Memorial Day? I read some reference to that in today's paper. Very fitting tribute to your father, he looks so handsome in his uniform. Thank goodness he made it through the war. I was born in 1942, on the day Japanese forces landed on the north shore of Singapore. My father was serving in the air force and was in parts unknown (to mum). How scary that must have been for everyone.

nice

@pyrrhula Thank you, Ferry. I'm so sorry to read you're still in pain as this is too long for someone with so many things to accomplish as you always do! I think of you daily as I watch my little nesting hummingbird, and as soon as I can do so without disturbing her, I hope to get photos of the eggs (or maybe the baby birds!) My thoughts are with you and as always, thank you for your too-kind words.

@pamknowler Thanks, Pam! The back of the photo has the names of my dad, his two sisters and their cousins. Nothing is said -nor a date- re the costuming, but I'm betting it was 4th of July. The picture has been in a framed collage for years, but impossible to photograph (through the glass) without taking it apart. I decided today its time had come!

@gardenfolk Thanks, Cathee! Today seemed about a perfect time to dust these off and I want to share them with my daughters as well!

@golftragic Thanks, Marnie. This is different from Veteran's Day (Remembrance Day) in the fall... I was born in August of '45 days after the surrender of Japan, so from the outset, my pictures are with both parents. I actually think my day was back from duty when he and my mother married, so she didn't have to go through what your mother did. She did, however, have a brother killed in the war, and I never even saw so much as a photo of him.... Bad times...

This is so wonderful, Louise. The cousins photo is incredible, your father was so nice looking!

This is really a family treasure

Beautiful story.

@Weezilou OK, thanks for the information Louise. When's Veteran's Day? As for the war, very dark days indeed. Everyone here was petrified Australia was about to be invaded. Thank goodness for the US, you guys turned the tide bigtime.

@golftragic Veterans Day is Nov 11 this year. I looked up the following, and I wonder how many of us got the point of Memorial Day incorrect... (My dad served, but lived, but has died... He no longer really fits any of the groups, but Today's note here is fine by me...) Check the following...confusing!

The purpose of Memorial Day is sometimes confused with Veterans Day.

According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, Memorial Day is a time for remembering and honoring military personnel who died in the service of their country, particularly those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle. Veterans Day is a time set aside to thank and honor all those who served in the military, both in war and peacetime. Armed Forces Day is the time to recognize those currently serving in the military.

@Weezilou Oh dear, you're right, very confusing, typical bureaucratic language, ie convoluted. November 11 here is always Remembrance Day (the date the Armistice was called), originally to remember all who served in WW1. Probably the same for you folks too. IMHO your dad 'fits' Veterans' Day very well.

A wonderful tribute!
May 29th, 2018
Super combination. My one town used to have a parade on each of the days and my dad would march in each.
May 29th, 2018
This is wonderful!
May 29th, 2018
@Weezilou When I was growing up, we took flowers to the cemetary for family members buried there. Now the day seems to be more for Veterans who have died, not necessarily while they were serving, at least that’s my take.
May 29th, 2018
Well, I'm not sure what to say. You've definitely found your niche in presenting photographs and text in a postcard format. This is just super, and the special touch of using the American flag for the background is the icing on the cake. A lovely tribute to your handsome dad!
May 29th, 2018
Thanks for you sympathies. I`ve had this twice before in my life so I know it we be gone, some day. Every house has it`s own cross. ( A Dutch proverb) I can handle it. Love to see you hummingbird pic.`s to come.
May 29th, 2018
a wonderful tribute Louise in your own special style
May 29th, 2018
@louannwarren Thanks Lou Ann...that's how I'm taking it! He served, and we're glad he came home, but he died too young and so this is how I chose to remember him. That's never a bad thing then, is it? : )

beautiful :)
May 30th, 2018
Gosh, that was young. Both my grandfathers were gone in their late 50's/early 60's. Both were war veterans. You have to wonder sometimes what they did and what they saw that they couldn't forget. Isn't photography a wonderful thing? Amazing to have such images to look at and you have arranged this very nicely as a lovely tribute to him.
May 30th, 2018
How wonderful to have these shots of him! Such a handsome chap :)
May 30th, 2018
I guess I have thought of you as being Canadian. I too was born shortly after the end of the war. Your father was a handsome chap!

@Weezilou - All the military observances can be difficult to sort out.

Armed Forces Day - annually observed on the third Saturday of May. It is a day to pay tribute to men and women who [presently] serve in all branches of the United States’ armed forces.

Memorial Day - a day we honor those who died in active military service. The last Monday in May.

Veterans Day - honors all who have served in the military, living and dead. It coincides with other holidays, including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, celebrated in other countries that mark the anniversary of the end of World War I; major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918

@skipt07 A *perfectly* laid out assessment of the holidays! Thank you for that! I had never read or heard that about the "formal ending" of WWI...how simply horrible that war was, though they're never anything but horrible.
