Hardy Stock

Imagine the Western Plains being covered with millions of bison running in herds! At this location on Catalina Island we saw several of the 200 who now reside on the island. In the early days of movie-making, 500 were brought to the island to be featured in a Western, but when they needed to be thinned, they were returned to the Great Plains (I was pleased to learn.) They're such massive beasts, and this one passed close by which was quite exciting! One can't see them and not think of how they would have been photographed in the earliest days. This is my simple way of trying to emulate that!
Wonderful!

@mastermek Thanks! That's not something we get to see very often...and certainly not roaming in the wild!

He looks rather intimidating. Wonderful to see him in a natural habitat

@salza We were told not to walk closer than 30' ... I wasn't sure what 30' looked like and I wondered if he could count...

Wow so exciting to see this fabulous beast in the wild! Another animal on my bucket list! I wonder if I will be more successful than I was with the moose? Lol! Fav - great processing!

Magnificent indeed!

Love your processing, Louise. It has that western and prairie feel. What a face and cute little horns. I think he was giving you the evil eye..."no bison burgers here...keep walking lady!"

Marvelous bison portrait, Louise! Catalina is so cool, I had never thought much about it till you started going there, now it’s a place I really want to see!

This is a great capture and processing, and as I grew up at ?Yellowstone Park, there are very few creatures who speak so strongly of home to me

@pandorasecho I love reading details like yours here on 365 and to know my photo resonated in this manner! What an exciting place that must have been to grow up!

@louannwarren While you're out here, you and Jerry might really enjoy staying over there a couple of days! I'll send you my Google upload of photos if you'd like...only didn't send them when I sent to some friends as I didn't want to be presumptuous that you'd care to follow us and the grandkids around Catalina!!!

@gardenfolk Thanks for liking his "cute little horns" Cathee (I thought they were, too!!!) 3 cheers for post processing as their faces were so dark I couldn't see the details until I post processed a little! Love being able to see his face now!

@pamknowler Perhaps you ought to arrange to give it a try!

amazing beasts. Reminds me of old Western movies

@cruiser "Old Western" is exactly what this bison's ancestors were brought to Catalina for! He's a descendant of the ones who were left to roam the island!

Not a history to be proud on.
Beautiful processed pic. with a great old fashion feeling.

Definitely nailed Old Western in this one Louise, great processing. Good to hear the surplus bison had a happy ending.
