Garden Greens... by Weezilou

Garden Greens...

Ok, Friends on 365...can't recall who all of you are...Marnie...Taffy...but several said to try the nasturtium leaves and flowers. Ok...this was a bit tentative...two young leaves (tasted one plain, and yes, Peppery...)

By the time I added the dressing and ate it altogether, I couldn't taste anything displeasing which is great that I now have more salad greens! The flower, alone, didn't have much flavor at all! I'm willing to add more next time!

And...the supermarket bib lettuce was plucked clean but I'd read I could plant the root end to grow more..I did on Easter day and it's already growing noticeably! Gardening made simple! I like it!
I can no longer eat salads or many fresh vegetables or fruit and I miss it. Have never eaten flowers and now I never will. But makes a lovely looking salad.

🙂 glad you have found a new green.
As a kid we would pick the flowers and I think suck the sap from the base of the flowers...or something like that....many moons ago that was

Bon appetit. It looks healthy and delicious.

@annied In Hawaii, we had what was called a Shrimp plant...There were lots of little blooms we could pull off and taste the drop of nectar...

@Weezilou my mum had one of those too! we called it the prawn plant hahaha never tried the nectar on those though

@annied Ken likes to say, "Separated by a Common Language"! Prawns...=...Shrimp...Funny! And my Plumeria is your Frangpani!

@kuva One look at my table and you can see I love flowers! Nothing I enjoy as much as making a pretty dinner-table presentation with food! Edible flowers certainly make that easy!

@Weezilou I like Ken's adage :)

Looks delicious.

It looks so pretty but for me keep the flowers off the salad! Lol! Tried them but wasn’t keen! Oh boy I would just love a big bowl of salad now! Lettuce, onions, peppers, tomatoes and grapes! Lots of lovely tasty dressing! Oh dear I have none of those things in the cupboard! Dream on! 😜😜😜

The fancy ladies tea rooms here use Nasturtium leaves and petals in their spring salads. They are so pretty, I think that’s really why they are added to the greens. I love your green glass rabbit!

Yep, I was one of the people suggesting that. So good you tried it and liked the taste.

@louannwarren ...eBay, back when!

Delicious looking salad. I often use flowers in salads and love the little violas too ;-)

Lovely capture Louise, and I liked your story - your planting lettuce root-end idea sounds like a good one!!! We're waiting for our salad leaves to get big enough to eat. They're just popping up through the ground at the moment, so we have a while to wait, I think!
April 16th, 2020
well done - you are right on both counts - eating the leaves alone, just peppery, but in a dish they are great, add more!
the flowers have little taste, but are a nice edible garnish that makes a nice display. As a child we used to bite the end of that little nectar spur at the back of the flower and suck the nectar out - the things that amuse children!

You ate the flowers?? I have seen this in posh restaurants (knew you were posh!) but have never actually put one in my mouth before. Always seemed slightly odd somehow, but that isn't logical!

It looks tasty! such pretty colours.

It looks lovely. Maybe I should give the leaves another try in combination with other salad ingredients.

Wonderful colors and presentation

@jamibann Thanks, Issi! I also read, that if you need to thin the lettuce to make room for larger heads, *eat the micro greens*! I suppose it won't leave you feeling overly filled, but I like the notion of utilizing everything! (...like discovering I already have "salad" growing in the back yard!)

@koalagardens AnnieD mentioned sucking the necter, but I dfidn't have any idea where that would be! Truly, THANK YOU to all who encouraged me to give this a go! I can see where I can stretch my fresh lettuce by half and get garden-grown nutrition! (It was pretty much the Aussies to encouraged this) I ♥love♥ my 365 family!

@casablanca Long before I heard here about eating the leaves, neighbours in L'burg decorated everything from salads to deviled eggs with garden flowers. OK...a couple of guys, and could they cook! Nasturtiums, yes, the tiny violas, yes, and Bourage. They used to say, "Eat Bourage for Courage!" Later I'll go to Pinterest to see what flowers are edible!

@merrelyn You may have read, above, that I realized I could stretch my grocery lettuce and get all the good vitamins by doing this! I also had green onion and diced tomato in the salad and with the dressing, I didn't have an off-taste at all! I just may come to loving it!
April 16th, 2020
@kwind @seattlite Thanks! If I'd do this to make a nice presentation for dinner guests, are Ken and I not worth it? It certainly ups "The Feel Good Factor"!
April 16th, 2020
@ludwigsdiana We'll get the violas later in the spring! I love being told by friends here on 365 that my garden can be so giving!
April 16th, 2020
@joansmor ...you could decorate your plate...boost the beauty of your meal and hey! another photo op!

So pretty! Wait, you planted the end of a bib lettuce and it's growing? My aero garden lettuce grew so fast it was ready for harvest in just a little over two weeks. and eating alone, I can't keep up with the pace that it grows! (It's on sale right now for $81 on amazon)
