This Scene Hasn't Changed in 134 Years

St Andrews Presbyterian church congregation has the longest history of any Presbyterian congregation in Canada, the first services being held in homes or the open air. In 1770 their first church structure was built on this site and enlarged through the years. It was in 1879 that this spire was increased to 118 ft. Of note is the distinctive fish at the top, and I'll add what was concluded here http://www.explorelunenburg.ca/st-andrews-presbyterian-church.html

"An interesting and unusual weather vane was placed on top the spire in recent times. The five-and-one-half-foot hammered copper codfish weather vane reminds one that the first Christians represented Jesus Christ by the symbol of the fish, and several of the disciples were fishermen. The weather vane may also be thought of as symbolic of Lunenburg, the fishing capital of Canada where Cod was "King."

I've tried for several years to find a good angle to photograph this, but in tonight's creeping fog and with the sound of a flutist playing a tune down at the bandstand, the mood and the atmosphere came together enough to finally satisfy me...
Fantastic shot and narrative Louise.

Awesome shot

Love this Louise, not only because it's a great shot, but also because my dad would have loved it. He would have visited Canada if anyone could have persuaded him to leave Ireland. We were raised in The Presbyterian Church and my mum and sister still attend one of two Presbyterian churches in my home town/village. Living in England I go to the URC a joining of Presbyterian and congregational churches.

The incoming fog does give it a nice touch. It looks nice and vintage

@ceilidh Oh Margaret, I was so delighted to have found a connection with this photo...I added the information for the very reason that it might strike a chord with someone! How lovely that it's you, and like you, I think it's warming to see a photo and remember a loved one in the connection. ♥

I just bought about 120 old random photographs off of eBay for use in mixed media paintings. As I flipped through them this afternoon, observing all of the varied examples of aging & physical damage, I wonder if I cannot scan them, edit out the subjects & save the aging & damage for use in other shots.

@jrambo001 Oh John...hello kindred spirit! Several years back we had to buy a very large bookshelf to hold all the old albums I've bought on ebay! I used them in collage work, but scanned many. I hadn't thought about the textures...thanks for the suggestion! (and maybe some of the penciled writing on the backs!) Now I have to wait until we're back home at the end of the year...unless I can find something in a shop up here to "play" with... Have fun! I'm sure you got some good stuff!

@Weezilou A friend in Oakland is a collage artist who seaches estate sales & such in the Bay Area for old photographs for her work which includes a lot of vintage wrapping paper designs, old maps & foreign stamps. I have also found some interesting Dover Publishing books full of many royalty-free old designs. The books are found pretty cheap on Amazon.

@Weezilou I want to embed photos into clear acrylic amidst painting in my work- not so much collage, but, something similar. I have not done it yet. Idea stage. Working too much lately (6 days a week almost all Summer) to even work much on my current portrait.

@jrambo001 First I should be gracious and say an appreciative thank you... then I'll segue and say I've got heaps of those wonderful Dover books as well! I bought a barrel filled with rolled nautical maps at an auction up here one year...then couldn't bring myself to destroy them in any way...so they're "decor"! I've got all the ephemera that college artists use...I just love looking through it all, but my current photography has filled the time I used to stand at my work space... I do understand your frustration about not having time "to do it all"!
