My title comes from a sweet family story as our daughter's family arrived one summer through this entrance. You go through immigration here, turn left, down a corridor and pick up your bags. They then handed their custom's declaration to the officer who opened the gate, and with a sweeping gesture, said, "Welcome to Canada!" I don't know how many times we've told the story and imitated the gesture, recalling the warmest welcome ever received!
Of note, the aircraft suspended in the photo above is a 2/3rds model of The Silver Dart, The original plane, designed by Alexander Graham Bell, made the first powered flight in the British Empire when pilot John A. A. McCurdy took off from the frozen waters of Baddeck Bay, Nova Scotia February 23, 1909. McCurdy later became the 33rd Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia (1947-1952).
Bell, most recalled for the invention of the telephone, was a prolific inventor during his years in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.
A great and beautiful shot of airfield entrance. Love that old plane. Thanks for sharing the history. John A. A. McCurdy most be a brave man. To me it look likes a tree wheel bike with wings.
Even your immigration center (guess you call it that) sounds and looks beautiful. I've gone through customs a few times at JFK and it looked nothing like this and there was nothing even close to a warm welcome!!
@gilbertwood Until we visited Beddeck in Cape Breton and went to the Alexander Graham Bell Museum, I'd had nary a clue about all he had accomplished! He was quite an extraordinary man who stood amongst the best inventors of his time. I'm glad I was able to share...I think many know little about him as I once did!
Amazing coincidence Louise, today I saw a resident and her Spouse, and he was being accompanied by a gentleman. He introduced me to him. Sorry I cannot remember where he lived in Canada, but I mentioned that I have a friend who lives in Nova Scotia and his face lit up as he told me he spend many a day in Nova Scotia as a fisherman. He couldn't tell me enough how he loved that area.
What a terrific story! would you mind doing a copy/paste to the memorial http://365project.org/Weezilou/365/2014-09-23 Others might find it interesting if they read it there! Thanks so much! (PS...I told you everyone loves it here!)
