Avila Adobe: The Parents' Bedroom by Weezilou

Avila Adobe: The Parents' Bedroom

"The lady of the house spent much time in making this bedroom beautiful, as did all California wives. When ships would anchor at San Pedro [a nearby harbor] eager ladier would accompany their husbands to barter cow hides for choice furniture and fine fabrics, silks, satin, and lace were selected for personal wardrobes."

Clearly they needed someone to carry the money and make change for them! (See Ken, some things never change!)

I love visiting old homes wherever we travel, and it struck me that, back in those long-ago days, furnishings were much the same... The basin and pitcher, the chamber pot, candles, and an attractively covered bed. Rather than show the whole room, I like this shot of the light coming through the window and falling on that beautiful silk cover. "Back in the day" you would hardly have noticed the dirt floor!

I wrote the history of this home, the oldest in Los Angeles with this photo: https://365project.org/Weezilou/365/2017-04-20

To all of you... I need to take my leave for the evening and pack a suitcase. Tomorrow is Dylan's birthday, and I have presents to wrap as well. Good night friends... Good night computer... I hope to catch up while we're visiting them and the boys are in school... Thanks for the many many lovely comments and those always-appreciated faves! ♥

This is gorgeous Louise! It certainly shows that they had money as it's very luxurious!
Happy packing - I am doing the same and won't be on 365 for a while too! Have a lovely time with the family! Fav!

Quite a different POV of a bed, and it was perfectly found and taken, Louise. I'm not sure I'd let anyone sit on a spread this beautiful. Fringe and all.... I'd say definitely vintage..... Too fancy for our tastes in today's lifestyle.

What a delightful shot and what a wonderful silk cover. Not one to throw into the washing machine, I guess?! Lovely, lovely image.

Great angle, I have to say those were indeed "glory days", my mother would say they should save that spread"" "for good". She saved the best linens for good. I finally told her that good wasn't coming, use those sheets, lol!

@gardenfolk makes you wonder how many cow hides it took to purchase that cover! There are those who would have just laid the cowhide on the bed! Of course this is more my style!!

@Weezilou I am more of a duvet and fluffy down comforter kind of girl. Guess back then, I needed to be born in Sweden or Quebec Canada! :)
