To test the rider not the horse, all of the athletes were on horses they had never ridden before and they had just 20 minutes warm up with the horse before the event.
That's a great shot. Sports Photographers have a name for this that I forget (how useful am I?), all about catching the right moment, which is incredibly difficult. I think you've got it here...
