Puget Sound Refinery by abirkill

Puget Sound Refinery

It was a gorgeous day in the Pacific Northwest yesterday, so I decided to take the car out for a decent run, as it's been a few weeks since I last used it.

I headed down to Washington State to do some shopping, remind myself how to use a gas station, and get myself slightly sunburnt, and then, shopping complete, I set off in a slightly random direction to see what I could find.

Ended up spending a bit of time in Deception Pass State Park (great name). Unfortunately the light wasn't the best -- clouds were coming in and there was a lot of glare. I think there are some great locations in the park in good light though. After that I headed over to Anacortes. By this time it was coming up to 9:00pm, and the sky was starting to get interesting.

This is the Shell Puget Sound refinery, about 60 miles south of Vancouver and 60 miles north of Seattle. I really like how the column of steam contrasts with both the hills beyond, and the colour of the sky. I also like the heat haze visible from the chimneys at the far right.

I foolishly forgot my tripod so this was handheld at ISO 800. It's a panorama of 9 vertical shots at 300mm, although I've trimmed a fair bit off the sides for the final photo.

Probably worth viewing large, the resampling this site has done during the upload process has made a bit of a mess of it at the normal size.
My first thought was, "Aaah, he's missing Fawley!" ;)
Love the colour in the sky and the big steam column on the left.
No danger of sun burn over here...

The big steam cloud on the left looks almost three dimensional. Really great contrast with the nicely colored sky behind it. I'm a big fan of the panoramic crops and stitches and this one came out great

Nice contrast of industry and nature... love the mountains and sky!
