It seems that the native butterflies prefer resting with their wings closed so you can't see the bright orange, red, and black of this one. I can see why, though, as it blends in so well with the ground where it was sunbathing in the evening light. So beautiful in flight, but rather intimidating close up.

great shot!!! dont laugh to hard.... but I just want to pet him... you caught the detail so perfectly i can see all his little fur... which makes me want to pet him.... silly me

After reading your comment about this butterfly being beautiful in flight but intimidating when up close, I took an even closer look and totally agree! There's nearly a scowl on that little face! An almost ticked-off look! And in my opinion, he's almost got a bird-face appearance, beak included.

NIce job! I used to think the underside on these was not pretty..just brown. But once you shoot one up close, wow! The patterns and different neutral shades are quite pretty! fav
