My son sent a text this morning saying there was a Great Egret sitting in the tree in his front yard. I dropped everything and hurried over. So as not to startle him I parked on the road and hiked into the yard through the pasture. Sure enough, there he was. Perched in the top of the tree. What was he doing here? I've no idea. There is a federal bird refuge south of us along the North Platte River, but even in their list of birds the Great Egret is listed as "Accidental." One has never been spotted there. Yet here it is. Amazing sight here on the prairie.
