Just when I thought we were done with the whales for the season, we took a drive up the coast a bit and came across more activity. This youngster hung out around the San Simeon Bay all afternoon while its mother was presumably further off shore somewhere. The whales were feeding on anchovies near our home, but was told by a fisherman that these are mackerel. Imagine how much these huge creatures actually eat if these are the fish that got away!
EDIT: Well, it seems the fishermen who told me this was mackerel were wrong. While they did catch a few, according to a parks docent, the feeder fish for this humpback are still anchovies. "Holy Anchovies" just doesn't have the same ring. Sigh.
I would certainly join the ranks of whale junkie
