Secluded

This is view into the rear garden of The Herschel Museum of Astronomy at 19 New King Street, Bath.

It was here in March 1781 that William Herschel discovered the planet Uranus using a 7' telescope designed and built in an attached workshop.

Sir Patrick Moore has described Herschel as ‘the greatest telescope maker of his day’.

The building has been designated by English Heritage as a grade II listed building.

The building was restored in 1981, and again in 2000, using period detailed wallpaper based on fragments discovered in other Bath houses, and carpets based on 18th century design.
