Today was the first day of Melbourne Open House - when 75 buildings in and around Melbourne CBD are open to the public for free. We only had time for two visits this afternoon, to the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Victorian Police Mounted Branch HQ. Both were fascinating. It was a bit dark in the horse centre, so here are some pics from the RACS. (There was a museum with interesting instruments etc. but there wasn't much time to look around as the guide was so interesting with his historical information and stories!).
Pics are: top left - the college mace, top right - the council chamber; bottom left - the college's grant of arms (which they lost, got a copy of, and then relocated in a bank vault!) and bottom right - carving on a cabinet donated by the widow of an important surgeon in the early 20th century
Great collage and info! I felt like I took the tour with you. The carving is beautiful and so is the mace. I like to take close-ups of things like that as well when I visit a place. I also like the story behind the certificate- that's pretty funny (and typical!).
I've always wanted to visit Australia but I think it will never happen except through wonderful pictures like yours. What a great idea to promote tourism and local history.
