Over the last two years, crafters have been making poppies to commemorate the centenary of the ANZAC Day landings. What started out as an idea to crochet 120 poppies for a local war memorial grew and grew into an international project, with uncountable offshoots.
More than 52000 of the poppies are on display in Melbourne's Federation Square over the weekend, in several installations. There's a huge blanket of them over the steps, a 'wreath' surrounding some bigger metal poppies, display boards covered with them, and some have even been 'planted' in the flower beds. (Best viewed on black if you have the chance)
Wonderful collage. I remember when I was young that we always had poppies in my hometown of Plainview, Texas. I haven't seen poppies here in Texas for many, many years. I wonder why the people here quit commemorating the ANZAK Day landings.
@nicolecampbell Well done to your Mum! The display was amazing. What did her poppies look like? They mostly kept poppies of similar design together, so we saw some 'batches' of different poppies while we were exploring.
Truly a "field of blood". Well done to those who created the display, and those who bravely gave their all 100 years ago ... and a FAV for this fine photograph which stirs the conscience.
Not only is this impressive, it is both beautiful and amazing! I wish we Americans remembered our fallen heroes better than we do. I don't think many of our younger generations really understand what it cost and how many families were effected by those world wars. Great collage!
