Taking Inventory by allie912

Taking Inventory

Shopping for groceries yesterday was an unusual experience. Many of the shelves were empty and on almost every row there were yellow strips of paper stuck under the cans and boxes. After walking up and down a few aisles, I began to figure out what was going on. Teams of men and women dressed in uniform shirts but clearly not employed by the grocery store were doing a complete inventory. The shelves could not be stocked til the inventory was complete. As we left the store with fewer bags then usual, I saw one inventory team taking a break. My son had done this job one Christmas vacation during college, so I know what a hard and tiring job it can be. I went over to talk to them and take a few pictures. They didn't seem to mind the attention. They had come from Staunton, about 175 miles away in the western part of the state. The funny thing is when my son did inventory he had to get up at 4 AM to drive with a team to Staunton to inventory some grocery stores there!
Aaahhh, it has come full circle. Isnt that funny? This is a great shot! Good for the theme!

Nice catch for the theme. I miss Krogers. We used to shop at Krogers when we lived in Lynchburg, and Food Lion.

Isn't it funny how sometimes the world is truly a small place -- and the coincidences are amusing if not eery. This is a good picture for the theme.

Great shot for the theme....and interesting story. These workers look they're enjoying their short down time.

Interesting item.... we don't seem to do that over here.... not sure why although everything seems to be computerised so maybe that does a running check? Anyhow... like the picture.

great shot and story, Allison! you're getting good at asking people if you can take their picture! Do you tell them about your project?

BTW, Nepalese food isn't anything like Thai (IMO). They make a wonderful flat bread called "naan" that can be "stuffed" with something - cheese, potatoes etc. The entrees are generally "stew-like" and meant to be served over rice. My favorite is called Sag Paneer. It is a creamed spinach with homemade chunks of a mild white cheese. As I write this, I realize how difficult it is to describe!

Great theme shot! You're so much more brave than I... I would have thought about trying to get the shot, but I would have been too shy to ask.

Yes, like Melissa, I would never have the nerve to ask for a shot. This is wonderful...and what a story behind it.

@melissapike @Swazzette I think the key was I did have that connection because my son had done what they were doing. It is a fine line between genuine interest, condescension and nosiness and the person you ask may take it one way even if you intended something very different,

I like the processing on this

Really? I had no idea that this even happened! The things I have learned on this project!

Our stores do their stocktake at night with very little effect on the customers!
