I took these shots yesterday but they didn't seem quite right to post for New Year's Day.
The shot on the left was taken from a distance. The hawk was sitting in the middle of the street and wouldn't budge despite cars driving by in both directions. I couldn't quite see what he was clutching so I edged up closer. At that point he rose a few feet in the air with the squirrel carcass hanging from his talons. He then dropped back down to the ground behind a telephone pole, just a few feet away. I think the weight of the squirrel was too much for him to transport very far or high. I managed to inch a bit closer but i didn't want to press my luck and backed off after getting the shot on the right. I felt like I had walked into Wild Kingdom!
@mrssmith I know! And I live in a seemingly uneventful neighborhood. Reminds me of an old out-of-print picture book by Ellen Raskin titled "Nothing Ever happens on My Block" "While Chester Filbert sits glumly on the curbstone in front of his house bemoaning the lack of excitement in his life, he fails to see the numerous amusing and dramatic events going on around him".
@allie912 I LOVED that book and my sons got such a kick out looking for the witch in the window! I bet it's still out there somewhere on one of those sites that tracks down old books. Actually I found "What Would You Say Dear?" on Amazon when I thought it'd be impossible to find it. So you never know. Great shots! I don't think the carcass was too heavy- I think he was ready to eat and didn't want to be bothered flying any further than he had too! Great catch!! (ugh- no pun intended!)
Wow shots of the hawk are just great...I didn't see this one and I'm glad..I would've felt bad as I was trying tso hard to get pictures of this hawk twice but he always flew away...so this morning he was too busy feeding..I took 45 shots..never had that much time before with a subject like him..
