In Richmond, Monument Avenue is a broad boulevard, both historical and very scenic, especially in the Spring. The annual 10K race held on this stretch of the avenue brings out 40,000 runners for a morning of fun and exercise -- despite this morning's temperature hovering a few degrees above freezing. Bands and DJs set up in the median, and friends, family and boosters cheer the runners with cups of water, cow bells and high fives. My church takes up most of a block on Monument so I walked over to be part of the cheering section and look for photo ops. Along with the serious runners there were many in costumes which definitely added to the lighthearted spirit of the morning. The fastest runner had crossed the finish line by 9:15 AM, but the waves of runners, joggers and walkers continued long after the winner was relaxing back home.
How delightful that "Santa-with-the-fab legs" and the cheerful taco took part! I wonderful race and parade all in one! You obviously had a terrific time and thanks for sharing the photos!
@bruni I think the winning time was about 34 minutes, but the walkers and joggers had a later start time as well as going slower. My friend who was walking finished at about 11:30.
