I've walked by plenty of utility poles in my life but never paid much attention to them. It turns out each has a story to tell. According to wikipedia:
"In the United States, utility poles are marked with information concerning the manufacturer, pole height, ANSI strength class, wood species, original preservative, and year manufactured http://www.pmcpole.com/cms/AWPAPoleBrands.pdf (vintage) in accordance with ANSI standard 05.1-2002 http://www.ansi.org/; this is called branding, as it is usually burned into the surface. Although the position of the brand is determined by ANSI specification, it is essentially just below "eye level" after installation. A general rule of thumb for understanding a pole's brand is the manufacturer's name or logo at the top with a 2-digit date beneath (sometimes preceded by a month)."
I wasn't much good at interpreting this biography, but I liked knowing that each pole was unique .
Thats cool, thanks for the info. Do you remember my April 21st posting of the utility pole (worms eye view)? It has metal "VEPCO" tag on it. I can't wait to take the information you have provided and take a closer look at that pole.
Missed this photo...harder to keep up with you aces! Never knew all those symbols on the poles were that important...then again why would they bother to add them if they weren't I guess ;-)
