Tree Triage

Last summer a friend had a tree come crashing down on her car from the strip of city-owned land next to the side walk. She had been calling "downtown" for months to report the imminent death of this tree but they never responded until it was too late. This summer i see X's painted in red on trees throughout the neighborhood, marking them for removal. The sad thing is some of the trees still look healthy. I think the city just doesn't want to get caught napping, but it will be many years before a replacement tree will give the shade of this beauty.

It's a shame to see a beautiful old tree go, but I suppose better to play it safe than to risk a repeat of what happened to your friend, or worse.

It's an awful shame for just large trees to need to be cut down. As you say it will be decades before an replacement tree will be as magnificent as this one. With a little $ many things "wrong" can be fixed and give a tree a whole new life.
