What Are You Staring At?

I was at the University of Richmond, taking pictures of the scenic lake and geese hanging out there. I got up close and snapped a few of the more picturesque residents. This one really startled me. Is this a normal appearance or some kind of weird growth? It didn't seem to cramp his style.
