Snap, Crackle and Pop

For those of you old enough to remember (and forgive me if this is a product restricted to the US) the ad campaign for Rice Krispies cereal was built around 3 little cartoon guys known as Snap, Crackle and Pop. The names were derived from the sound the cereal makes when you pour on milk. What does that have to do with this tree branch? I thought the seed pods looked like Rice Krispies. I wish I could tell you what kind of tree this is, but I have no idea. Maybe someone out there can identify it.
Update from the grounds manager:
the plant you are asking about is a Cryptomeria. It is an evergreen that looks like it has "dread locks" . It has very similar growth habits to a Leyland Cypress but is not used as frequently so it makes it more unique. We have 2 HUGE ones out infront of the lower school main enterance. This past summer with the really HOT & DRY conditions were hard on them so we have a lot of pruning back to do this winter and spring.
Pretty picture
