Photo Workshop

Karen (hwy61) and I went on a field trip to the museum today. A workshop titled "How do you take pinhole photographs?" was offered with no registration required. The description in the museum monthly newletter read, "Artist Willie Anne Wright demonstrates the pinhole camera technique, followed by a gallery discussion of her work on view in the exhibition Civil War Redux."
The workshop was worth it just to meet Mrs. Wright. This feisty lady has been creating pinhole photographs since 1972 but she admitted that she exhibited her first work in the museum in 1944.
Although it is possible to create your own pinhole camera from an oatmeal box, the one seen here was made of wood and purchased from a specialty camera company.
The photos in this collage are just a few taken at Civil War reenactments, a popular week end activity for history enthusiasts. The picture on the bottom left was photographed at Hollywood Cemetery which I visited for Memorial Day http://365project.org/allie912/whatintheworld/2011-05-30
I heard a lot about pinhole photography, but never read into it a great deal. I may need to check it out.

Looks like it was an awesome and entertaining workshop led by an awesome and entertaining lady! Your collage could have been a postcard the museum sent out to advertise it- it really seems to capture the whole purpose of her class and photography. Excellent!

Oh...fun! Great picture! I've recently read about this kind of photography. It's very interesting. Are you going to try some pinhole photogrgraphy?

@mrssmith Maybe if I could find a 2nd-hand camera to fool around with, but I downloaded directions for making one out of an oatmeal box and it is WAY too complicated for my little brain.

@allie912 I thought the same thing! I thought of asking my brother to help me since he has a mechanical mind. I do not.

Allison, you did a wonderful job capturing the essence of Willie Anne Wright. She was amazing for her age...which I guess we figured had to be about 85 or so! And the photos were wonderful! But I agree, unless I could find one of the ready-made cameras I won't be attempting the "make your own camera out of an oatmeal box" thing...I'm just not crafty like that!!!

for a physics class in college, one of the labs was to build a pinhole camera. It was pretty entertaining, but my pictures weren't that great since it was an evening lab and there wasn't enough light. Plus, being an impatient college student, I was not overly concerned with the end product, but just completing the lab so I could leave. I'll have to do that with grandson one of these days. Nice collage.
