Not many miles from Saint Stephen's School is the Ringling Estate where John Ringling created a Venetian Gothic Palace on Sarasota Bay. Inside the decor evokes William Randolph Hearst's castle, San Simeon. Not surprising as both are part of the Gilded Age in American history, a time of conspicuous display by the industrial barons of the country. My immediate response was "wretched excess" but it is certainly grand and worth preserving.
