A Dark and Secret Place

Normally this structure on the edge of the playground is a wooden gazebo in which children play together in the shade. For the next few weeks it serves a different purpose. Here is an explanation sent as an email by one of our art teachers:
Taylor Dabney, professional photographer and Upper School Photography teacher, has been transforming the gazebo on Fort Cougar at the Lower School into a camera obscura. As our visiting artist, he will be leading Lower School art classes through an experience in the darkened enclosure, where images of the playground will travel through a small hole and lens and show up on the opposite wall. This precursor to photography may provide surprising results to young and old alike. Students will also create sunprints, or cyanotypes, another early form of photography. All Lower School art classes will cycle through this immersive experience in the next few weeks as weather permits. Please feel free to jump in and attend/help any group or class you see gathered round.
I hope I'm not too late to participate. Sometimes it is hard to get away from the library.
