Childhood Innocence in Central Park by alophoto

Childhood Innocence in Central Park

I originally posted a silly selfie today, but then thought that it wasn't appropriate for the day, September 11.

In honor of this day, I wanted to post a shot that I never shared from my summer NYC trip. A shot that I loved, yet was never quite satisfied with the processing for. A shot of childhood innocence. I snapped this in Central Park, stuck my camera through some bars as I saw this sweet scene.

I am grateful that this little one (and mine) weren't there on September 11, 2001, to see how absolutely horrible and hate filled we people can be.

It was so beyond awful to watch the news that fateful morning and see live footage of people leaping from the towers, see the second plane hitting the tower, hear about the unaccounted for plane. To see the towers fall and later realize that they had been full of people. Wondering what the hell was going on. It was wretched to see footage of people in other places celebrating and cheering as we Americans wept and worried and wondered.

But despite the heinousness of the day, beauty came out of it. Heroes came forth and rushed in to save people, many giving their lives. Passengers on a flight knew what was likely in store for them and bravely rushed the cockpit. We held hands and sang patriotic songs together at work, comforted one another. My neighbors met for a candlelight prayer vigil and we cried together. We all rushed out and bought American flags to show our pride and united front.

The crime against humanity, opened us up to our neighbors again and if only for a season, it broke down barriers. I am grateful to have been a part of that.

Praying for my friends in NYC who were more profoundly and directly affected that day. Praying for those who lost someone dear. Praying for peace and healing and restoration.

May the children never know another such horrible day. May there be peace on earth.

@mcmary I also did a shot for Sept 11 after originally posting my kooky selfie for the day. I thought it inappropriate and moved it up a day. These were the thoughts of a non New Yorker who just watched it unfolding on the news.

Fantastic pic and thoughtful words! Everyone was a New Yorker that day. The entire world changed after that. Maybe not for the better in some ways. But in every way, it changed the way I thought of people. For as much darkness there is in life, there is also kindness, humanity, and love.

@snaphappy1 Praise God for that. Thanks, friend!!

You brought tears to my eyes, Amanda. You wrote about that day so well and thankfully the children will hopefully never know of a day like that day. Wonderful post and photo. So glad there are so many good and kind people in this world, too bad they are not all like that. Hugs to you my friend.

Lovely words and lovely photo. It's so nice that so many people have thought to post such kind photos and words, in memory of that fateful day.

The gentleness of this photo certainly shows the world we want, not the world we have. After all this time I am still angry at the loss of life that day, and in the war that resulted.

@dreamatrix Thank you, Paul. Love that we were both on the TT last week. Your road shot was awesome.
September 12th, 2013
@amandal I missed that...
September 12th, 2013
@dreamatrix WHAT?! I congratulated you on that, I think. You were #19 for the week, I believe:). That's awesome. Have you been TT before?
September 12th, 2013
@amandal Yes, a few times, I don't know if it's a very fair system, it doesn't worry me too much. I've been so so busy this week, trying to catch up now...

Your words are very touching
September 13th, 2013
@zambianlass Thanks so much, sweet lady. It felt good to write them down.

@dreamatrix Yeah, it's not completely fair seeming, but it is always nice to be recognized. I've gotten to where my photos don't make it up on PP anymore unless I get 20, 30, sometimes 40 faves. That's crazy. I was surprised and pretty stoked to make it up this week again with a selfie.

Lovely words Amanda. We were woken by my partner's brother and told to turn on the TV. We sat in silence as we watched the scene unfold in front of our eyes. My partner knew people who worked in the Trade Centre. I got no sleep and then went to work. I worked at Foxtel at the time, which is Australia's main satellite company, and we had screens showing the news all over the call centre. It was a quieter day that day but I still had to deal with people getting angry because they hadn't paid their bill and had been cut off. I may have told someone to get some perspective! We later found out that all of my partner's work colleagues had been offsite and were okay but they had all lost friends. A very small minority of people changed the world that day but strength comes out of adversity and we will never forget.

what a great picture of innocence ... extremely touching narrative .. it was a dark day for humanity ... this picture is akin to a small lower blooming in the debris ... love the sentiment!!

@thirtysevenways Appreciate hearing your memories of the day as well. It's amazing how there are times in our lives where we can remember every detail.

@friend2303 Love your wonderful comments, Vijay!!

Been catching up with you, and this is a beautiful capture. We unfortunately will never forget, but it's so nice that we can still see innocence around us! {{hugs}}
