Passenger services on the Bridgewater began in 1769 and you boarded from these steps. The boat was drawn by three horses, the postilion had spurs and a whip and blew a horn as a warning. In 1843 the first class fare was 3d. The boat went at 6mph.

Such a pretty building and place. Wish there was a little closer shot to see.

Very handsome property and a beautiful view. Thanks for the snippet of history, enjoyed that.

PS Is that a Daimler you are standing by in your thumbnail? I can't recall having seen anything like it.

Nice shot David, our paths keep crossing, I was in that very spoy a couple of weeks ago :)

(the water was the same when I was there as it is today - any idea why it has changed from that wonderful rusty colour to the 'common canal brown')?

@ellida Yes it is a Daimler with a Hooper body. A beast of a car with only 2 seats and a 2 litre engine. Underpowered but still thirsty!

@bluefirebucket It is not as rusty coloured as it used to be. The colour is caused by iron ore deposits in the mine and it may be that the low rainfall has caused less leaching out of the colour.
