Last week I went to the old naval college in Greenwich and had a walk around taking a few photos. Tonight I didn't quite make it as far as Sarf London, instead I jumped off the DLR at Island Gardens and took some photos from across the Thames. (see http://365project.org/andycoleborn/365/2011-02-11 for last week's pic).
This is the Old Royal Naval College, built in the 17th century and used originally as a hospital, it was then a naval college for over 100 years, before becoming the University of Greenwich in 1999.
The white building dead in the centre is The Queens House designed by Indigo Jones and built in 1614. On the hill behind the Queens House is the Royal Observatory (visable if you enlarge), best known as the location of the prime meridian/GMT. If you enlarge, you an also (just about) see the green laser light that marks the meridian.
This snap was a 2 second exposure taken about 5:15pm.. probably a little early really for a long exposure shot (without any filters) but I thought it was worth experimenting.
This is spectacular. I love the composition and the lights reflecting in the water. Thanks for sharing the history of the structures, too. Fascinating.
@Swazzette thanks Sue - if you do get to London, make a day of it, there's so much to see and do and then catch the river taxi back to central London... a great day out
come on now where did you place your camera for the 2 second exposure, surely not on a tripod! I actually adore the lighting you got with your exposure
@andifree haha as if :-)... this was on a wall again
