The Old Rose by andycoleborn

The Old Rose

I drove past this recently closed down Victorian boozer on The Highway in Shadwell the other day and thought I'd revist during lunch one day for pic...

Was lucky for some random passber-by action... probably on his way to McDonalds...!!

The side road, Chigwell Hill, is still cobble-stoned and leads down to Tobacco Dock and the nearby News International HQ... Seems even the hacks can't keep a traditional old boozer alive these days...!!

The plaque about the door says "This is the cornor of Chigwell Streate 1678"
@blightygal Recognise this place?

Wow. Really great matching lines alongside the pavement. Unfortunate for people and environment, only the mac survives.

1678 ..wow the history of it all.....think of all the people who have been in and out of that doorway, the different clothes, the smells and the noise....excellent capture of disappearing London. Shame about the Mac sign.....We just drove down The Highway last weekend going into London. Lovely evocative shot Andy.

@Cherrill so true... I found this about some murders in 1811 in the next street along when trying to find a bit of info about the pub http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ratcliff_Highway_murders

@andycoleborn Ahh, The Rose!! I most certainly do - been in there quite a few times. You know, meetings, and all that, lol. Shame to see it closed down, but yup, you're right, News International kept it going - it used to be closed on Sundays anyhow, as nobody was at work!

Excellent captue Andy - the dude looks a bit confused too. I like that the traffic light happens to be yellow - perhaps a warning to him to be careful in making his next decision. Haha.

@andycoleborn -haha sucks too when you go some place you're looking forward to - like a drink here - I find it boarded up. Hey Andy I posted a few more parade street pics you may like :)

Such a shame...proper pubs closing down and (no doubt) trendy bars opening up...and I HATE the way these huge corporations just stick their crappy advertising up anywhere....grrrr.... . LOVING the pink double lines though :)

Poor old thing. Interesting contrasts between the old building and the 24/7 mentality.
November 2nd, 2011
At least the building still stands... waiting to be revived another day I hope.
WE too are losing so many old pubs..

Bev
It's sad to see local places closed down... Nice picture.

So sad to see the history get killed off. This photo says it all...the way the man is standing there...alone and dreary looking...the sky off in the back. I am glad you told about the plaque and how old this place is. Heartbreaking for it to be closed down.
