hedge-laying - after

So how does this work? Do they cut as well as bend or have I got it totally wrong? The fields in the background look beautiful.

Very interesting process. I'm with narayani, how does this work?

Nicely captured. Background compliments the foreground giving a feel of being alone.

@narayani @thewatersphotos they cut part way through the trunk and bend it over, then they'll prune it, and then they bang stakes in and weave the living branches in and out. And they'll fill in any gaps with the pruned branches til the hedge grows and thickens up itself. Approx!

@chrisiow there were five or six youngsters - which bodes well for the future. I'll try to go back and have a close look, but from a distance I couldn't see any obvious duff bits.

@kipper1951 thanks - in real life, not competition, this would be an intensely lonely occupation
