Humvees

As part of our training we had an opportunity to visit an Army Reserve center and talk to a Captain about leadership and service. He was a really cool guy and it was a neat experience.

Did you know that 18 veterans kill themselves everyday, and that 30 each day attempt suicide? Plus many others are not receiving the treatment they need for PTSD and other injuries. Please think about this. Recruiters will try to create neat experiences for young people. I'm sorry if this sounds harsh, but the reality is much harsher.

@moonpig I know that the Army is not without issues. My little brother is in basic training right now, and I can't say I don't worry about him. I do feel that the majority of people who serve have the best interest of their comrades and their countrymen in mind, even if they; as all humans, make mistakes at times. There is no perfect organization, the only thing anyone can do is learn from our own mistakes as well as the mistakes of others and do our best to make things better.

The gentleman we talked to wasn't a recruiter, he was in no way trying to convince any of us to join the military. He was there to talk about leadership and how it relates to the service professions. I am a full-time volunteer with a nonprofit organization and myself and my fellow senior corps members will be leading groups of our peers in a year of service in Detroit metro area public schools. We were given the opportunity to have a very candid discussion with this Army captain about leadership. He shared with us the procedures for counseling soldiers and talked about how the Army develops leaders.

Thank you for your comments. No, they were no too harsh. Education is key to overcoming any obstacle.

It sounds like you are a generous person doing good work. I jumped to a few conclusions, so I'm sorry. I agree that education is the key. Just to be clear, I don't question the intentions of our troops. I do question the makers the weapons, the producers of oil, and those in government who are making tremendous profits from war, while the soldiers get 38K and often a lifetime of trauma. Thanks for listening, responding, and not deleting my comment!
