@kylec Thank you! Okay, I have a whole directory of attempts -- apparently if you take 350 tries at it, you might get one that works out. :) Man, I'm glad digital film is so cheap!! Seriously, the advice I got on the last picture (which pretty well sucked) was to try manual focus. I think the camera was so blinded by the brightness it couldn't zap in the focus quickly enough. And then it's a question of trying to hold my breath and squeeze the shot without moving the camera, but there a tripod would have been handy. :)
@kandernob Thanks, Karen! Night shots are hard, although I think a tripod might help, because the longer shutter times seem to make them doable. Maybe I can drop enough hints between now and October (my birthday). :)
Great shot - I am still trying to get a good moon photo. It's amazing what we do to try to get a good photo. I have found that sitting on ground and using knees is also a good way for me to brace camera with the big lens. Since starting 365 if I am trying to get a good photo I don't give it a second thought and will just sit down on the ground and start snapping pictures
@lindaagne365 That is too funny, Linda! My other picture last night was just a snap at the gas station, and the first one I took was a stealth picture because there was another car there and I felt silly taking a photo of my car at the pump. Luckily, she drove off so I could actually get it. :)
And the hay bale I got was from another gas station parking lot, but that one I didn't hide taking!
The moon is such a challenging picture to take. Yours looks great. How do you get in so close with 100 mm focal length? If you cropped, how did you maintain the clarity?
Hey Linda! Great job on the moon! My tip is definitely use a tripod - even a cheaper one! You can check out my efforts - they're at 1/250. But I would also make use of your 2 second timer which gets rid of even more shake!
@httpgeffed Thanks, Colleen, this was is such an improvement!
@nadaa Well, don't get me to lying but I know my camera has 80x zoom, but half of that is digital zoom only. So, I wonder if the 100 mm is the travel of the lens only, and then the digital zoom effectively doubles it? And the only cropping I did was even up the black around the edges, center it better.
@nanook Thanks, Christina! I saw a bright morning moon and I almost... and then I thought nahhh, I've posted a lot of moon photos lately. :) And this one came out well enough, not sure I want to tempt fate! :)
You'll use a tripod a lot once you get it. Not just for the moon either! Another handy gadget is a remote dealy..if you don't already have one. Then you don't even have to touch the camera..but of course you can do that with the timer. Ther remote thing for my camera was less than 20 bucks I think.
@drewhuy Yeah, I just got kind of overwhelmed -- there are a lot of tripods, and prices go from $30 to $120 and then I roped filters into the discussion and those were $50 -- so I walked away with a lens cap (didn't have one) and pkg of rechargeable batteries because I'm munching through AA's four at a time! And thanks for the compliment on the shot. At the end of the day, I'd say manual focus did help, a tripod and using the timer would have helped, and luck plays a big part! Haha

NTS: Remember to try manual focus for moon shot.

@snaphappy1962 thanks so much, Gina!
@shootingben thanks, Ben! I agree, a tripod is on the want-list. Never thought about the timer -- another feature to find. :)
@shootingben Thanks for the tip about using the timer. As Linda said, another feature to find and use.
I looked at tripods today, but didn't buy one....
