Attempt at Rolling Hills

Tried a tutorial showing gradient in hills. Certainly looked a lot easier than in practise.
Here’s the link to the tutorial - https://youtu.be/z6xy7xkKPJM

Still struggling to get gradients. This was also a test of patience as I had to wait for the picture to dry. I did not use a hair dryer

@salza I like the sense of gradients though the shapes and change of colour shades. Patience always gets me.

You've got the values showing beautifully,and I love the subtle colours in the sky.

It is so difficult to do! Well done Sally!

@salza I think this is spectacular. The hills have the perfect gradient and I love the way the sky blends so smoothly!. Incredibly well done in my opinion. Patience rewarded

@salza - watercolour, wet-on-wet, i take it? it's hard to get that colour blending of the sky in watercolour, at least for me. this here is perfect and the rolling hills is so well done, although i'd have the farthest mountain a tad lighter than the middle ones. but i've not done this sort of practice, yet, so maybe i shouldn't critique. but overall, sally, it's ACES!

Thanks for the complimentary feedback. One thing that I did learn from this experiment was how little pigment you need to use and to use a lot more water.
Vikki it is watercolour - sky was wet on wet but the hills are wet on dry. Maybe I should redo it and do everything wet on wet.

I like that and I like the gradation in the sky too

@salza I like the result. Lovely transparency in the colour. I think the mountains can not be done wet in wet. You would lose the sharp top edge. I have tried something similar a while ago. It is quite tricky to get the right amount of pigment and a believable gradient in the layers. I haven't watched the tutorial yet, but from my point of view, the layer in the front needs a bit of details, like a ragged edge, as in the closer view the eye can distinguish more detail. Even if you do not paint distinct trees, just a more ragged edge would do.
But I love the result, I love the sky. A monochrome painting is quite hard to do. Well done!

@monikozi thanks Monika. When I say wet on wet for the hills I would do them individually and use the bleed for the gradient. Of course it may not work at all but I think I'd like to try. As someone in a tutorial mentioned 'it's only paper'. I did wonder about trying to add trees to the front hills
@casablanca thanks

@salza Aaaah, you mean to add a layer of water in the place for the mountain range and then add the pigment? And then let it dry and repeat for the next one? If yes, than that should work indeed. Start with the pigment at the top and drag it down.

@salza this looks beautiful! Well done Sally.
