Washing-up brushes! Not very polished, but I rather like the overall effect.

The photo was a bit of a throwaway to be honest. I've been eyeing up those brushes for a while: there's probably a good photo to be had from them but it's not this one.

I like the lighting. I like the texture and color of the glass. I'm not sure I like the pov- it's half and half for me. And I'm not sure I like the black metal wire- I think it fights with the curves of the brushes. Since you're not crazy about it, I thought I'd put my two cents in! Oh but I do like the whitish background with the green glass.

@olivetreeann Your 2c are much appreciated, and that's pretty much exactly what I was thinking. Devising some invisible means to stand the things up and fetching the big tripod in from the car would be moves in the right direction. The whitish background is what passes for a summer sky around here, by the way.

@automaticslim Modeling clay might work. Stick them in a chunk of it, but crop that out of the picture.
