Near the waterfront stand seven wooden poles. Collectively they represent the brightest constituents of the Pleiades M45 cluster (Maori name: "Matariki"). By the way, that white tent in the background is a portable ice skating rink which appeared on the waterfront back in mid-December (very popular with the kids of course).
These sculptures are truly fascinating: the tracery of wooden poles looks terrific in black and white. And stars in the background perfectly complement the picture! Well, that's enough praise! The beginning of this story made me turn to Wikipedia, and I found out that Matariki uprises in late May or early June. So I thought that it would amazing to have this picture with carved poles and with the risen Pleiades M45 cluster together!
By the way, the overall impression from the picture looks like a frame from a movie about aliens thanks to ice skating rink! hahah! Sorry, but I love this picture!
Thanks.
