backpack blessings

although i am in denial and have yet to finish getting school supplies, tonight we were able to bless lots of kids with a backpack full of the supplies they need. our small group at church, along with our families, went out in the community to deliver them, and the photo on the right is of my boys and a friend loading backpacks onto the bus.
this isn't a brilliant photo, but it was certainly the best part of my day! (:
What a super idea. I think it is so neat when things like this are coordinated for the benefit of those who need it. I bet the kids loved it too, didn't they? What an awesome life lesson for the young people at your church to be involved in.

What a wonderful and selfless thing to do! Won't those school-age recipients now be thrilled to return to classes, and they'll feel so good about their new supplies. (Remember what fun it was to begin with that fresh box of crayons?) Your boys are learning such a wonderful lesson, and I can see why this was your day's highlight! ...thanks for keeping Dill in your thoughts tomorrow...it's a small thing, but a lot of folks here love him...

Wow what powerful photo to emphasise your story, good on you and your family, no cold should ever suffer poverty or hunger or warmth and most certainly not go without love, in the real world they do I know and that saddens me

You didnt say where you were sending those supplies but for some reason I get the impression they were staying in your own community. People assume that we are in the best position to help those less fortunate because we live in a developing country and extreme bare bones poverty IS all around us but we tend to forget that there is poverty albeit a little more hidden in rich developed countries that often gets overlooked. We are lucky that every International School (esp IB schools as it is a curriculum requirement) has given our kids ample opportunity to help often in a very hands on a practical way. It is such a great lesson in community...'it takes a village'....you are giving your sons.

That's really cool that you are able to do something so thoughtful (and needed!) as a family.

thanks all! and tanya, yes--the backpacks stayed in our community. our church gets the school supply lists for the elementary, middle, and high schools all around town, packs the backpacks full of the necessary supplies, and then distributes them to families who need them. it is such a relief for the parents, and don't ALL kids love fresh new supplies in a brand-new backpack?! (: i loved my boys getting to see the joy on the kids' faces when they received their backpack. priceless!

What a wonderful idea!!! You are going to make a lot of kids happy with new backbacks and school supplies!

P.S. Thank you for the comment on my photo - crepe myrtle it is! It's the same bush in our backyard the Japanse beetles have chosen for their mating spot... I guess, they decided to move on to better pastures and to let it bloom in its full beauty ;-)
